MDE Early Literacy Update * Michigan released the M-STEP scores on Tuesday, 8/31, and as expected, results were down compared to the 2019 results. Reports released by EPIC broke down the results<https://epicedpolicy.org/michigans-2020-21-benchmark-assessments/>, the students who took the test, and the students being retained. In third grade ELA, the percentage of students considered "proficient" or higher dropped from 45.1% to 42.8%. The declines in scores were most drastic in the most vulnerable student populations, as only 15% of Black third-grade students, only 31% of Hispanic third-grade students, and only 28% of third-grade students who are considered economically disadvantaged scored "proficient" or higher in ELA (compared to 48%of White students). * The percentage of students who took the test ranged by grade from 64% to 72% (72% of third-graders took it), but White students and non-economically disadvantaged students were much more likely to take the test. In Detroit Public Schools, less than 10% of students took the test, but in Forest Hills (near Grand Rapids), 90% of students took the test. * About 5% of third-graders are eligible for retention based on their ELA scores. Black, Hispanic, and students who are economically disadvantaged were much more likely to achieve a score that qualified them for retention than White or Asian students. Considering "Good Cause Exemptions," it's not likely all these students will be retained. Katharine Strunk emphasized that given the low percentage of students who took the test and the wide disparities in who took the test, the number of students who are actually drastically behind in reading is more than the M-STEP indicates. The festival will open its virtual doors from December 9-10, 2021, and present two free days of panels, craft sessions and illustrator draw-offs with your favorite Latinx authors and illustrators of picture books, middle grade, young adult, graphic novel, comic books and poetry. Library of Things ideas

Hi, library brain trust! We have come into some money recently and would like to spend it on creating a Library of Things. I am looking for practical ideas, not STEM, etc. as we already have a good STEM collection. I have ordered a mobile projector and a heavy-duty sewing machine but wondered what items others have in a similar collection. snow melt systems

Hello all - Our snow melt system out front is in need of replacement. We are currently considering three options: 1. Do nothing and hire someone to manually remove snow and put salt down, 2. Replace the current system (hydronic tubes through concrete), 3. ThermaHexx - a pedestal mounted paver/stone system. We have been looking at the pros and cons of each system. And my board thought it would be nice to hear from other libraries that have heated sidewalks (especially libraries "up north" or in the UP with lots of snow!). Our first system failed after about 15 years. We are trying to decide if it's worth the investment for a new system. Thank you for any guidance you may have. In view of outstanding demand and the recent spike in coronavirus cases, the FCC will open a second application filing window for schools and libraries to request funding from the roughly $2 billion Emergency Connectivity Fund Program's<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fcc.g…> funds remaining for connected devices and broadband connections for off-campus use by students, school staff, and library patrons for the current 2021-22 school year. The second window will open on September 28 and run until October 13. Eligible schools and libraries will be able to apply for financial support to purchase eligible equipment and services for students, school staff and library patrons with unmet needs. capital grant impacts?
