See below for more details: About the Symposium Archives in public libraries, colleges and universities, and historical societies are the locus of where local history is found. As part of their communities, they document and share what defines and characterizes a place. As the profession has more generally sought how to make the collections we build more diverse, inclusive, responsive and relevant, approaches and tools have changed. More often than not, those tools and approaches involve technology in some way. With a focus on digital collecting and digital storytelling, this symposium will focus on how the Digital Age and technology have changed what and how we collect and how we share those collections. The listening tour dates are Sept 14 and 16. There are two different times each day to attend. Broadband is a critical topic for improving the quality of life for all Michiganders. Join the Connecting Michigan Taskforce (CMIT) for a virtual listening and learning tour to discuss broadband and technology in the state. Local and regional stakeholders are invited to participate in order to: * Learn more about the Connecting Michigan Taskforce * Hear about recent federal and state broadband efforts * Provide your insights and feedback to CMIT on broadband issues and solutions in your community Each session will be 45 minutes and will include an open Q&A portion with a focus on finding solutions for broadband challenges and identifying issues in Michigan's broadband ecosystem. Thinking of digitizing your yearbooks? This article addresses issues of copyright, FERPA, COPPA, and the Right to Be Forgotten, as well as includes recommendations for archivists and librarians undertaking similar digitization projects. The Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies (JCAS) announces the publication of volume 8, article 14, "Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy and Other Legal Issues," written by April K. Anderson-Zorn and Dallas Long. For the schools and universities that produced them, yearbooks promoted a shared sense of identity and experience among students and helped create enduring loyalty to the institutions long after the students graduated. For scholars and other users, yearbooks are unique primary sources that provide insight into past eras of local student life and culture. In regards to user engagement and preserving local histories, student yearbooks should be ideal candidates for digitization by libraries and archives. However, yearbooks are challenging digitization projects because they are likely to contain privacy-sensitive photographs and other information as well as potentially copyrighted content created by multiple parties. An understanding of state and federal privacy laws, such as FERPA, and the ethical obligations to preserve the privacy of individuals is essential to addressing multi-layered concerns for digital access. The authors offer guidance for yearbook digitization projects based on their investigation of these issues as part of an initiative to digitize their University and K-12 schools' collections of yearbooks.
