Program Recommendation- Digging in the Shadow of the Shard

Hello, On Saturday the Baldwin Public Library hosted the fascinating and entertaining program Digging in the Shadow of the Shard. The program focused on archaeological digs that have been done in London, England. The program progressed through the different time periods of London, highlighting specific or intriguing finds from each period. Ellen Green was the presenter and was great! She was personable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Ellen is a PhD researcher at the University of Reading in England, specializing in human remains. Prior to her return to academia she was a field archaeologist in London for 5 years, and she has worked on sites from every period in the city's history. Many participants commented how much they enjoyed the program, one saying it was a breath of fresh air. Something to keep in mind, Ellen lives in England and as such the program must be remote and most likely on a Saturday or Sunday. Bake & Taylor Sustainable Shelves Program

Hello everyone! If your library/organization has used/is using the new Baker & Taylor 'Sustainable Shelves' program, I would be interested in your experience/impression. We currently recycle items that have been weeded, after giving them chances to be purchased in our library's book sales, but are always looking for new ways to handle withdrawn and donated materials. The Dearborn Public Library, in collaboration with Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, will be hosting marine biologist, writer, educator and broadcaster for a virtual discussion regarding her new book The Brilliant Abyss - Exploring the Majestic Hidden Life of the Deep Ocean and the Looming Threat that Imperils It on Saturday, July 10 at 1 pm. Dr. Scales is the author of the Guardian bestseller Spirals in Time, New Scientist book of the year Eye of the Shoal, and the children's book The Great Barrier Reef. She writes for National Geographic Magazine, the Guardian and New Scientist, among others. She teaches at Cambridge University and is science advisor for the marine conservation charity Sea Changers. Helen divides her time between Cambridge, England and the wild Atlantic coast of France. Covid-19 id a "known" hazard. Birth to Five Literacy Support Network Hubs grant

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce the Birth to Five Literacy Support Network Hubs grant. This grant is funded by the Preschool Development Grant Birth to Five<https://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-63533_97446---,00.html> (PDG B-5). Michigan was one of 20 states selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to receive this award. >From the PDG B-5, there is an allocated amount not to exceed $600,000 for competitive grants to support the development of ten regional hubs. The regional hubs will provide programs, materials, professional development, and other resources for educators to support literacy learning and learners in their earliest years as the foundations for literacy and future learning. The ten regional hubs will form a network to increase equitable access and improve early literacy outcomes where providers, children, and families can seek and receive specific developmentally appropriate early literacy supports. The network of hubs will collaborate to support all families and learners with resources aligned to those provided from kindergarten through high school graduation. The ten awards will be in the amount of $60,000 per hub to be expended through December 30, 2021. The Birth to Five Literacy Support Network Hubs grants will: * Be equity focused, to ensure all racial and ethnic groups, linguistic and cultural groups, indigenous populations, low-income, and rural communities have equitable resources and programming; * Offer high quality and effective programming built on existing programming and resources within the communities and regions in an ongoing, supportive, and relevant manner; * Plan to be sustainable after the end of the PDG B-5 grant; and * Define "success" and identify qualitative and quantitative methods to measure successful outcomes of the programming and resources.
