ACADEMIC Libraries -- Mental Health First Aid Training June 8 - Open to multiple registrants from same library

Just wanted to put in a last reminder here since we have 2 seats left for the June 8 Mental Health First Aid class on June 8. Please see below for full details and the registration link. This class is accepting registration from staff working in academic (college and university) libraries only. Another training session is scheduled for July 20 and will accept registrations from all library types when it opens. Please find a registration link below for the June 8 class. Registration is open to multiple staff from the same academic library. If you would like to have more than one attendee from your library participate in this opportunity please go ahead and register using the link below. Mental Health First Aid Adults Training for Academic Library Staff The Library of Michigan is offering a session open only to academic library staff on June 8, 2021 for Mental Health First Aid-Adults. Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, the program offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like what do I do? and where can someone find help? Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community healthcare providers and national resources, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support. All trainees receive a program manual to compliment the course material. The Mental Health First Aid training includes a 2-hour self-paced course, followed by a 5.5 hour instructor led training. Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion or attend the full instructor led day will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Because seating is limited and a specialized certification is issued, you will need to agree to a number of stipulations and complete the MSU Extension registration here. Please review the details on the registration site before completing your registration. Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion, attend the full instructor led day, or do not complete the post-work and evaluation will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Cancellations must be received at least three business days prior to the class. Participants who register for a training and fail to cancel at least three business days prior and no-show will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. Improving Access to Information Grant program This LSTA grant program is designed to provide public and academic libraries with the opportunity to expand services for learning and access to information and/or to develop library services that provide all users access to information. The intent is to fund one-year projects that improve access to library collections and information. The expected focus will be the improvement in access to library users in one of the three priorities listed below and that align with the LSTA priorities listed in the grant documentation. * Improve access to services & information in areas of literacy. * Improve access to services & information in areas of local history or special collections. * Improve access to information for community users with limited online access, e.g. improving equity through digital inclusion. The grant period is one year (Oct. 1 - Sept. 30) and funding is from $5,000 to $25,000. Funding is by reimbursement only. Applications are due Thursday, May 27, 2021 by 5:00 PM EST. Eligible applicants are Michigan public libraries that are legally established and currently eligible for state aid or Michigan academic libraries that meet the standards for library service listed in the grant documentation. According to https://usafacts.org/visualizations/covid-vaccine-tracker-states/state/mich… which they claim was updated yesterday (May 21), 46% of the state, or 4,687,194 people, have received one dose. If you scroll down, there is a breakdown by age, and it only goes down to age 16, so my guess is that the 46% only includes people 16 and up. To double-check, I used 9,986,857 from the U.S. Census estimate of Michigan's 2019 population of adults 18+, and divided the total number of people 16+ who have been vaccinated and came up with 46.9%. (Please note that I used my math skills to do this - double-checking is highly advised.) >From this, it looks like the 46% who have been vaccinated does NOT include children under 16. *Queen City Seed Library opens for 2021 season* https://www.uppermichiganssource.com/2021/05/21/queen-city-seed-library-ope… MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The Queen City Seed Library has now reopened to the public for the 2021 season. Located on the main floor of the Peter White Public Library, this volunteer-run community organization has been providing seeds to anyone who would like to start a garden — and learn to harvest and save seeds — since 2016. During pandemic-related closures, Queen City Seed Library remained active with online seed swaps and no-contact pickup options. Thanks to volunteers, the Seed Library cabinet is stocked for this gardening season. Stored in a beautiful antique card catalogue, a wide variety of annual vegetable seeds are available to “borrow” — the same way library books are “borrowed.” At the end of the growing season, those who have used the seed library are asked to harvest seeds from the plants they grew, and just like returning a library book, “return” seeds to the seed library to replace the “borrowed” seeds. Seed saving workshops, online help, and an annual Seed Swap are offered each year to support seed sharing and seed saving. The Queen City Seed Library organizers are guided by the words of seed activist Sara McCamant, who has said “To make a stronger local food system, we need to continually work at bringing more local seed into that food system.” A seed library does just that.
