Please indulge me while I brag about our web designer, Ismail Msuya. I'm very proud! Msuya Awarded AI Institute Fellowship <https://news.nmu.edu/msuya-awarded-ai-institute-fellowship> (May 21, 2021) Ismail Msuya, web designer/developer for Northern Michigan University's Lydia M. Olson Library, has been awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services fellowship to attend the 2021 IDEA Institute on Artificial Intelligence (AI). An aim of the institute is to spark future innovation, collaboration and dissemination of AI in library and information environments. The institute is a week-long, evidence-based and applications-oriented professional development program for professionals in the field. [image: image.png] “AI has predominantly become a part of our daily lives,” said Msuya. “The adoption of AI in libraries and information environments will open the door to transformative opportunities for increasing library usage and enhancing the overall user experiences. A prime example of such opportunities includes the implementation of AI and visual sensors to translate sign language into text or speech at the circulation and reference desks.” Msuya also noted that some public libraries have implemented the Pepper robot, the world's first social humanoid robot. The Pepper is able to recognize faces and basic human emotions, to assist with library services, such as locating books and periodicals and responding to questions, including research questions. “Learning about and integrating AI seems like the perfect next step for me to combine my experiences and knowledge in design thinking, usability and accessibility. The implementation of AI will enhance my future daily problem-solving strategies in my workplace. I can visualize precisely how AI will work collectively with our current advancements to successfully impact the direction we want to take with our library.” Msuya will spend one week in July 2021 at the Institute in Knoxville, Tenn., pending COVID-19 circumstances. The fellowship covers a maximum amount of $500 for the program fee, lodging, per diem or program meals and transportation to Knoxville. Msuya will also participate in an online pre-institute onboarding program and post-institute activities, like project presentations and implementation. The acronym IDEA stands for Innovation, Disruption, Enquiry and Access. The IDEA Institute on AI is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. His work responsibilities range from providing technical support for virtual reality and the Digital Media Tutoring Center to addressing website needs for the Library and Instructional Support (LIS) division. “I have worked on revamping the library website, the implementation of virtual reality in the library and the implementation of the pandemic documentation website. Currently, I am working on revamping our Space Reservation System to enhance the overall user experience and integrate with other campus systems such as The Hub, the new campus community platform.” I'm looking forward to the good things this program will bring to libraries. Based on findings from the Institute of Museum and Library Services-funded Storytimes for School Readiness and Community Needs project (LG-96-17-0199-17), a multi-state study of public library storytime programs designed for preschool children, we created a fully online asynchronous module designed to support librarians’ learning. Enhancing Storytime Programs to Better Support Children’s Learning Outcomes is both the title and the focus of the learning module which was developed at the University of Kentucky. The learning module consists of a narrated presentation and video demonstrations as well as self-reflection questions and responses embedded throughout. The module is freely available and accessible via this link until June 30, 2021: https://www.hdilearning.org/product/adult-child-interactions-in-storytime/ We estimate the module will take approximately 95 minutes to complete, and participants will be offered a certificate of participation upon completion of the module. The module is hosted on the Learn Dash learning management system licensed to the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute. To access the learning module, you will be required to create a username and password. As part of the learning module, you will be responding to self-reflection and knowledge questions embedded throughout the module. You will have the option to consent to allow researchers at the University of Kentucky to review your responses and include them as part of a larger study designed to help us understand more about librarians’ priorities when planning storytime programs. You may not get personal benefit from taking part in this research study, but some volunteers experience satisfaction from knowing they have contributed to research that may possibly benefit others in the future. If you do not want to be part of the study, you may indicate that preference. You will still be able to utilize the learning module, but your responses will not be reviewed nor included in the study. Your employers will not know whether or not you have agreed to allow the data to be used by researchers. The questionnaire is designed to be part of the learning module, and the module will take about 95 minutes to complete. There are no known risks to participating in this study. Your response to the questionnaire will be kept confidential to the extent allowed by law. When we write about the study you will not be identified. Your responses will be linked to your username; however, prior to making the responses available to the researchers, staff in the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute will remove all other data, including the username. The researchers of this study will not attempt to connect your responses to your identity in any way. If you decide to stop participating after you begin the questionnaire, you can continue the learning module without responding to additional questions and still be offered a certificate of participation upon completion of the module. The information collected in the responses may be used for future research or shared with other researchers without your additional informed consent. We hope to receive completed questionnaires from about 1,000 people, so your answers are important to us. Of course, you have a choice about whether or not to complete the questionnaire, but if you do participate, you are free to skip any questions or discontinue at any time. You will not be penalized in any way for skipping or discontinuing the questionnaire. Please be aware, while we make every effort to safeguard your data once received from the online learning management company, given the nature of online surveys, as with anything involving the Internet, we can never guarantee the confidentiality of the data while still on the learning management company’s servers, or while en route to either them or us. It is also possible the raw data collected for research purposes will be used for marketing or reporting purposes by the learning management/data gathering company after the research is concluded, depending on the company’s Terms of Service and Privacy policies. Library Parking Requirements

Greetings,I’m dealing with a rather unusual problem for which there does not seem to be a specific answer, at least not that I may find. VBDL is a district library where our local municipalities provide our facilities, and the library district staffs, stocks, and equips the provided facilities. One of our library branches shares a parcel of land with another building which is not currently occupied. Both the library branch building and the unoccupied building, which used to be a bank branch, are owned by the local municipality. The local municipality has decided they would like to sell the old bank branch. The problem is both buildings share a single parking lot. If the old bank branch were to be sold, the lot would need to be subdivided. The VBDL branch library is 5,500 square feet with a total staff of five individuals. There are only seven parking spaces adjacent to the library branch, the remining 14 spaces are adjacent to the old bank branch. The municipality does not seem concerned that subdividing the lot would leave the library branch with only seven spaces. I went to a meeting of the Township council and they seem to think that the lack of patron traffic, which is due to the pandemic, indicates the library needs only seven spaces total. They also suggested library patrons may park in the street. I may find no state of Michigan law or standard that prescribes how much parking is required for public libraries, by square footage or occupancy. Further, the local municipality has no ordinance or zoning standard specific to libraries and museums. The parking standards for libraries I may find for other municipalities in Michigan vary considerably. I’m looking for something specific to the state of Michigan that defines minimally how much parking is required for public libraries. Recently MIOSHA, for purposes of the pandemic, have grouped libraries and museums in with retail, so I suspect it may be appropriate to consider libraries as retail spaces for zoning purposes, if not otherwise specified. Fine Free Circulation Changes

Hello Fellow Libraries! Our library is considering becoming 'fine free' in the near future. I see that some libraries, when they make this transition, make slight changes to their circulation policies that might best suit the change from fines to fine free, such as preventing patrons from checking out or using their cards if they have a certain amount of existing overdues (must be resolved before any new card transactions can be made), a shorter transition period from 'overdue to lost', etc. If anyone has made this transition and would be willing to share with me any types of changes they made to their circulation policies or overdue time periods at the same time, I would be so grateful to hear your experiences, reasoning, and reactions to these changes. Or perhaps if you became a 'fine free' institution and did NOT make any changes, I would still love to hear your experiences. reasoning, and reactions. They hold up to 6 discs, and the multi-disc inserts can be removed to just hold 1-2 discs. There is no brand on the cases. The cases are black with a clear plastic cover around the outside to house inserts, and the dimensions are 5.5 inches across, 7.5 inches tall, and 1 inch wide.
