The Governor's Educator Advisor Council has made recommendations in light of COVID-19, including replacing retention letters with IRIPs and "Read at Home" plans, allowing districts to use multiple literacy assessments as opposed to just the M-STEP, and extending literacy support beyond K-3. A new report from the Detroit Education Research Partnership<https://education.wayne.edu/detroit_ed_research/derp_third_grade_reading_an…> connects chronic absenteeism with the probability of being identified for retention under the Read by Grade Three Law, finding that each year of being chronically absent in K-3 is associated with a 26% increase in the probability of being eligible for retention. They make policy recommendations for reducing chronic absenteeism particularly in kindergarten, as being chronically absent in kindergarten is predictive of future chronic absenteeism and the negative effects of chronic absenteeism is additive over multiple years. Such policies may include required kindergarten enrollment and/or expanding state-funded pre-K. Hi, I hope everyone enjoyed the snow and cold! We have reschedule the MI PR Group Learning Session on Canva for Tuesday, March 16 at 10am. Mary Ruthko from the Bay County Library System will lead a learning session about Canva. Tuesday, March. 16 at 10am on Zoom Canva is a graphic design platform, used to create social media graphics, presentations, posters, documents and other visual content. The app already includes templates for users to use. The platform is free to use and offers paid subscriptions like Canva Pro and Canva for Enterprise for additional functionality. The MI PR Group was created to bring Michigan library marketers together to share successes, learn from non-successes, and to tackle industry issues together. Whether your job title is "Marketing", or promotion is just one of many hats you wear, this group is here to support you!
