For 19 years, the Genesee District Library has hosted an annual Black History Month Brunch. In the past it has been a morning of inspiring speeches, lively conversation, good food and great entertainment. More importantly, it has been an opportunity for Genesee District Library to recognize local people and organizations who are doing important work in our community, by honoring them with the Award of Excellence or the Partner in Progress Award. As you may have concluded, due to Covid-19, we are not able to host an in-person Brunch this year. So, instead, we have partnered with ABC12(Flint) to produce a televised 20th Anniversary Black History Month Celebration. In this program we will hear from former honorees and be treated to performances by Linkin' Bridge and Voices of Service. The 20th Anniversary Black History Celebration will be aired on Thursday, February 11 @ 7 p.m. on ABC12. For people who do not have access to ABC12, it will be streamed simultaneously on Facebook and YouTube. However, don't miss the simulcast because due to licensing restrictions, a recording will not be available later. Free Virtual Events at the Paw Paw District Library

Paw Paw District Library has two Zoom events coming soon. If you are curious about true crime, we've got two authors you may want to see. Gangsters Up North author Robert Knapp will discuss his book on Thursday, February 18 at 6 pm. Knapp also wrote Mystery Man, and Small Town Citizen: minion of the mob. Find out where some famous mobsters were in Michigan's vacationland and what they were doing there. Cold Cases: a true crime collection: unidentified serial killers, unsolved kidnappings, and mysterious murders author Cheyna Roth will talk about her book on Saturday, March 6 at 11 am. Cheyna Roth is a former prosecutor, a reporter, a new mom, and an author. She takes a modern approach to famous crimes in her book. Join us to hear her take on some high profile unsolved crimes. Public Services Librarian (Adult and Teen) Fowlerville District Library is committed to providing a stellar customer experience for its community and guests. We are a small but growing library with plans to expand in both size and scope of services. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Library Director, the Public Services Librarian creates and implements programs and engages with the community through outreach, events, and thoughtful collaboration. The ideal candidate is passionate about the transformative role libraries should have in the lives of the community. They are enthusiastic, creative, collaborative, and excited to deliver out-of-the-box customer experiences. This position will be focused on adult and teen services, but experience with youth services is a plus. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Provides and models excellent customer service in all aspects of the job. * Creates, plans, and implements a variety of programs and activities both in and out of the library. * Sets and achieves library’s goals * Provides outreach services * Compiles and shares monthly program statistics * Increases skills and knowledge through professional reading, webinars, and workshops. * Writes grants and implement library grant initiatives. * Facilitates public displays. * Operates up-to-date technology, such as 3D printers and other innovative equipment. * Provides patron-focused reference and reader’s advisory services for all ages using library catalog, Internet search engines, and subscription databases. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Ability to plan, coordinate and direct work. * Ability to always treat co-workers and the public with courtesy and respect. * Strong written, verbal, and technological skills. * Demonstrate emotional intelligence and ability to work through difficult situations. * May work some nights and weekends to support programming and outreach events. QUALIFICATIONS: * Master of Library Science from ALA accredited school required. * Minimum two years librarian experience preferred. Staff member tests positive

Are you closing if a staff member tests positive for COVID-19? We have closed in the past, but I haven't heard of other libraries closing recently for this reason. Are we taking a different approach now, or am I just not hearing about it? What is your procedure now? We have a staff member that is getting tested today, so we're trying to plan... If you are a Class 4 or 5 city library, and your city does not provide financial services for the library, I would like to know: 1. How much do you budget for accounting services? 2. How much do you budget for bookkeeping services? 3. How much do you budget for your annual audit? 4. What is your total operating budget? 5. How much do you budget for payroll services? 6. How many employees do you have? 7. Do you have employees who perform any of the above services for the library? Snow Days and MEL reports

[Michlib-I] Blocking Patrons

Hello all, I don't know if any of you remember my email from a month or so ago about overdue items, but here's a little update: I got some back! It was truly a miracle to find them in my dropbox one morning! Unfortunately, not all patrons decide to return their items. There is one who I can't get a hold of, who I'm going to give up on. My questions is this: if they return the books but want them renewed/ want to check out more, but I know they'll likely be checked out and kept for months on end with, again, no means of contact, am I able to just block the account and refuse service? If the books remain checked out and are never returned, I know the account can be blocked for overdue items, and just mark the items as lost. But what happens if you know the patron is incredibly unreliable, and seems to take advantage of the free services? Is it something I need to discuss with my board? I guess that's really more than one question. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? If so, how did you solve the issue when communication wasn't an option/ didn't work?
