Program recommendation-The Snow Killings by Marney Keenan

Hello there, I wanted to recommend an author who made a virtual visit at our library last night. Retired *Detroit News* journalist Marney Keenan presented an engaging, eye-opening, and morbidly fascinating presentation, based on her recent book *The Snow Killings: Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation* (McFarland Press, 2020). Like myself, if you lived in Oakland County (or even SE MI) in the ’70s during the time that these events occurred, then this is a story that you likely have never forgotten. A time of innocence became a time of vigilance, and it was a scary time to be a child, or a parent, back then in the wake of the murders. True crime remains a popular program topic, and since this one is Michigan-related and even local for some libraries, I highly recommend Marney. Thanks, David M. MCLS offers Foundations of Digital Literacy virtual workshop

Registration is open for virtual training offered by MCLS for library staff on foundational digital literacy topics. This two-day virtual workshop will be offered twice in March. Class sizes are kept small to allow for personal attention and interactive activities. The Foundations of Digital Literacy workshop is designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like a basic introduction to digital literacy topics. Knowledge and skills taught and practiced during the workshop will include a basic understanding of hardware including internal and external components of various devices, how various types of networks function, the composition of webpages and websites, various browsers and their functionality, search engines and tips to perform an effective web search, how to evaluate search results, and information on digital privacy and cybersecurity. As this workshop will be presented virtually through Zoom, participants will need to have a basic knowledge of how to log in and participate in a Zoom meeting. This is intended to be an interactive course that involves discussion and hands-on practice. To successfully complete the workshop participants must have a microphone enabled, and if possible, a camera. The workshops are two days from 10am – 12:30pm Eastern (9am – 11:30am Central), and will be offered on March 18-19 and March 30-31. The Clarkston Independence District Library seeks a creative, enthusiastic librarian to join a positive, team-oriented work environment and lead our Children's & Teen Services departments. Head of Children's & Teen Services Hours: 40 hours per week, includes some evenings and weekends Salary: $48,000-$64,000 depending on qualifications and experience Benefits: Health, dental, and optical insurance; Disability and life insurance; Vacation, sick and personal days; Retirement plan. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: * Develop collections and manage budgets for Children's & Teen services departments. * Collaborate with community organizations and schools to promote the library. * Design and coordinate a variety of activities to promote the use of the Library by children, teens and families. * Hire, train, schedule and supervise part-time children's librarians, program assistants, and a full-time teen librarian. * Foster teamwork among the Children's and Teen department staff. * Assist patrons of all ages in obtaining information in a variety of formats. * Provide readers' advisory services to patrons of all ages. * Instruct patrons individually and in small groups in the use of library resources and equipment. * Develop Library policies and procedures with administrative team. * Coordinate volunteer projects for youth volunteers. * Update Children's & Teen Services portion of the Library's website. Required Qualifications: * MLS from an ALA accredited institution. * Experience working with children and teens and enthusiastic commitment to children's and teen services. * Desire and ability to provide excellent customer service. * Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to work independently and as a team leader. * Supervisory experience. * Public library/reference desk experience. * Experience working with an ILS, Polaris preferred. * Collection development experience.
