Library Director-Southwest Public Libraries (OH) Closes tomorrow, Oct. 25! Working with a staff of 74 team members supporting two locations and a $6.4 million annual budget, the Library provides excellent customer service vital to its 145,000+ constituents. Reporting to the seven-member appointed governing Board of Trustees (appointed by the School Board), the successful candidate will effectively collaborate with the Board, the staff, the Friends of the Library, and external partners to communicate the Library's mission and goals. Key opportunities include developing and implementing library services and programs through and after the COVID-19 pandemic, representing the Library in its many communities, through equity, diversity, and inclusion-ensuring that the Library welcomes all and provides access to information at the Library and outside the Library's walls, developing a robust staff development plan, continuing strong stewardship of resources, and developing and implementing emerging library technologies. In addition, the Director will continue to create and model a culture of learning and innovation. Our Communities. Southwest Public Libraries, the second largest library system in Franklin County, serves Franklin County, OH plus one square mile in Pickaway County through two library locations-Grove City and Lincoln Village (the Westland Area Library). Seeing significant population growth in the last decade, SPL serves urban, suburban, and rural diverse communities including a large Latino population and new populations of Somalian and Russian immigrants. Both Grove City and Lincoln Village have much to offer in addition to excellent libraries. Under the direction of the governing Board of Trustees, the Library Director functions as the Chief Executive Officer of the Library System; administers the overall program of library services to the residents of the South-Western City School District; directs human resources programs for the Library System; oversees development of library collections; administers budget and reporting system and monitors fiscal operations; oversees management of Library property; directs public relations for the Library System; and fulfills the other obligations to the Board of Trustees. The Director works closely with staff to support the Library's core values. The Director is expected to be an effective advocate, collaborative partner with all stakeholders, and bring innovative and creative solutions and ideas forward meeting the Library's mission. Qualifications. Minimum requirements include 3-5 years of professional library experience at the supervisory, management, and/or administrative level and a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program. Essential attributes include personal integrity, experience with fiscal oversight and budgeting, excellent interpersonal skills, and consensus-building skills. The Library Director, through care, compassion, and energy will galvanize an outstanding staff to position the Library at the forefront of library service in its communities. A thorough knowledge of current trends, technologies and "best practices" for libraries, experience reporting to a governing Board, and an advanced degree (MPA or MPA) are highly desirable. This online project is designed to be an in-depth, long-term exploration into library leadership. The program has four components: - Participation in twice-monthly professional development sessions from December 2020 - November 2021 - A monthly informal chat with colleagues to talk shop - A $1000 stipend to carry out a project designed for community impact - A face-to-face conference (fingers crossed!) in November 2021 designed and led by participants A laptop and access to Google Drive are required. Participant expenses -- including acquisition of a laptop if you do not have one -- are covered with a $1000 professional growth stipend. Space is limited to 20 participants who will be selected by application based on their application, geographical diversity, balance of class sizes, and experiences. Preference is given to library directors but is also open to department heads and assistant directors. Online applications are due online on Friday, November 6. Old Detroit Free Press and News up for grabs

Hey Everyone, I had someone for our community donate two old newspapers to our library. We can't use them and neither can our local historical society. Is there anyone who would like them? I can send them in RIDES delivery... They are the Detroit Free Press from Wednesday, April 1, 1981 and the Detroit News from March 31, 1981 and seem to center around an assassination attempt of President Reagon. They are yellowed and have fold marks in them because it looks like they were stored in the original delivery bag folded in thirds but otherwise are in good condition. Larry Martin "WWII: In Their Own Words" digital program

Hello Fellow Public Librarians, I know we are all looking for quality programming ideas that can be done virtually. The Jackson District Library is transitioning one of our most popular programs into a digital program that I would like to recommend to all of you. Over the past 12+ years, the Jackson District Library has hosted Larry Martin's In Their Own Words ([ http://lmww2.com/ | Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words ] at our Carnegie Branch. Also during this time Larry has also done this program in libraries around the state of Michigan, and it always gets a great response. "In Their Own Words" has drawn between 80 and 150 attendees per event. An estimated 5,000 people have come to hear the reflections and experiences of WWII veterans that Larry has interviewed. We will begin hosting Larry once a month for a Zoom/Facebook Live program until the end of 2020. Larry will show one of the hundreds of interviews that he has done and then answer questions from the audience. The interviews are always interesting and Larry has interviewed at least one person who experienced every part of WWII, from prisoners of war, to German citizens, to soldiers who survived Pearl Harbor. To hear these men and women discuss there experiences in WWII is truly fascinating. Larry is very excited by the fact that he could provide this program to libraries around the country digitally, so if you are interested in having this amazing program you should reach out to him. Program Recommendation Meet Mae West

She was professional, easy to work with, and attentive throughout the planning process - truly pleasant. During the program she engaged the attendees with questions that they responded to via chat. At the end, attendees commented that they were interested in finding out more about Mae West and that the program was "excellent" and "fun". DESCRIPTION: The Part-Time Teen Librarian develops and implements collections, outreach, and programming for teens, parents, and other adults who work with teens. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Provides direct reference and reader’s advisory service to patrons of all ages.  Plans and executes collection development in a variety of formats and subject areas, including selection, display, access, analysis, weeding, and budget management. Manages graphic novels, manga and teen AV collections.  Plans and executes programs and services for teens to promote or facilitate the use of library resources. This includes, but is not limited to, seasonal reading programs, book talks, school visits, STEM workshops, and book discussion groups.  Recommends annual goals and objectives for the teen department.  Creates an environment that attracts and invites teens to use the facilities and collections.  Facilitates and maintains teen pages on the library’s official web site, as well as blogs and social networking accounts set up to reach out virtually to the library’s teen patrons.  Works as a liaison with the schools to encourage teens to use the library.  Plymouth community teen champion and advocate.  Attends and participates in staff meetings and committees.  Represents the Library in community organizations.  Performs other tasks as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:  MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school.  Strong public service orientation.  Thorough knowledge of standard public library reference and readers advisory sources.  Knowledge of current reading, viewing, and listening interests of teens.  Must work effectively with adults, teens, and youth and be committed to and enthusiastic about teen library services.  Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, managers, and vendors.  Flexibility in scheduling is required.
