Presque Isle District Library receives LSTA grant for Sesquicentennial Digitization

Presque Isle District Library is Awarded Federal Grant for Digitizing Historical Collection ROGERS CITY, MI We are pleased to announce that the Presque Isle District Library is the recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), "Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) Improving Access to Information" grant through the Library of Michigan in the amount of $15,084 for the digitization of a historical collection entitled, "Presque Isle County Sesquicentennial (1871-2021) Digitization Project". This extensive collection will be made available to the general public and academia through the Michigan Service Hub of the Digital Public Library of America. Regional support for this project will be fulfilled through the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS). "Once this historical collection is digitized, it will be made available to the general public worldwide and we are committed to ensure that the collection is sustainable and maintained in perpetuity. Also, October is Family History month. This is a great time to celebrate our local genealogical history", stated Amber Alexander, Library Director. Alexander added, "We plan to hire two part-time individuals who are skilled in computer technology to help with the scanning and digitization process for the duration of the grant project". Partnering with the Presque Isle County Historical Museum, this collective archive spans one hundred and fifty years. "The museum has a massive collection of documents, photos, and genealogies that trace the 150-year history of the county and Rogers City. Through this partnership with the library, our most valuable research and reference materials will be available online and at no cost to people around the globe. This has been a goal for the museum that goes back to when we first acquired the massive Calcite photo collection", stated Mark Thompson, Curator and Executive Director of the PICHM. 2 of 2 Both organizations will be working together to scan and digitize the Great Lakes maritime and lumbering history, early homesteading, the historic Calcite Collection, oral history recordings, archival correspondence, and related documents. There is nearly seventy six thousand items to be digitized and preserved for future generations. The grant period is for one year starting October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021. Anne Belanger, who will act as the grant administrator on the project, is the program director and grant writer with the library. "During the statewide shutdown due to the pandemic, I was researching grant opportunities that addressed the needs of our community and this particular grant was well-suited for both the museum and the library. It offered us an opportunity to collaborate in a meaningful way to address how we could preserve the historical collection of our combined archives. It was a very competitive grant. Only ten applicants were approved out of twenty three applicants. We are very grateful for this opportunity", stated Belanger. "As pillars of our communities, libraries and museums bring people together by providing important programs, services, and collections. These institutions are trusted spaces where people can learn, explore and grow," said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. "IMLS is proud to support their initiatives through our grants as they educate and enhance their communities. We would like to ask your participation in Library Snapshot Week to begin on Monday October 12th and run to October 17th to coincide with MLA's library appreciation month this year We will be sharing and retweeting your #MiLibSNAP content and posting some of our own. We hope that you will join us and promoting the awesome things you do! Please participate using whatever social media platforms you are comfortable with. Feel free to post multiple times over the week and make this your own social media campaign to promote your library. When you Post,Tweet, Snapchat or Instagram use the hashtag #MiLibSNAP so everyone can easily find (and possibly retweet or share) the great things that you are doing in your library and community. You can also see some examples of what Michigan libraries did last year by going to Facebook and Twitter, search #MiLibSNAP This campaign does lend itself to posts about library data but that needn't be the only thing posted. Please excuse this self-promotion -- I'm facilitating an ALA workshop on Modular Learning Design later this month, and I wanted to share if it was of interest to anyone on this list. *Flexible Online Instruction Using Modular Learning Design Workshop - October 21, 2:30p EDT*With our myriad responsibilities and busy schedules, librarians frequently produce online learning materials ad hoc or in a race against time, missing valuable opportunities for synergy and consistency. This workshop delves into the concept of modular learning, an approach to developing intentional, strategic online learning objects that involves building documentation and structure into our work so that content is ready to be updated or remixed to meet different learning needs in the near, mid-, or long-term. We’ll work with ideas that we can immediately apply, such as learning design, evaluation and assessment, accessibility, and usability. However, she does recall that it's about a girl who is trying to create her masterpiece, but her brother Art is constantly messing it up. EO 2020-192 Moves region 8 (the Upper Penninsula) to Phase 4

Governor Whitmer signed EO 2020-192 (https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/MIEOG/2020/10/02/file_attachmen… ) this afternoon which moves Region 8 (The Upper Penninsula) back into phase 4 as a result of an uptick in Covid-19 infections. * REGION 6 IS NOT AFFECTED BY THESE CHANGES. LIBRARIES IN REGION 6 ARE UNDER THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED FOR THEM IN EO 2020-183 & EO 2020-184, AND IN EFFECT ON 10/9/2020 * THESE RESTRICTIONS ARE ALREADY IN EFFECT AS OF 10/9/2020 FOR REGIONS 1-5&7 UNDER EO 2020-183 & 2020-184 These amendments are requiring Region 8 to adhere to the same restrictions in social gathering and organized events; overall occupancy restrictions, and remote work requirements as Regions 1-5 &7 Changes below go into effect on October 9,2020 Specifically, Region 8 is now subject to the same occupancy and gathering limits and Regions 1-5, and 7. That is: For Libraries in the UP (Region 8) this means: Amendment of EO 2020-183 (https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540600--,00.html) , Section 6: Social Gatherings and Organized Event limitations: Theaters and spaces with FIXED SEATING (seats attached to the floor)- Occupancy is 20% of occupancy rather than the previous 25%. Meeting rooms and event rooms with NON-FIXED SEATING (that is standard meeting, event, conference rooms)- occupancy is now 50 sq. ft per person (or 20 people per 1,000 sq. ft.) rather than the 40 sq. ft. per person listed in EO 2020-183. Amendment of EO 2020-183 (https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540600--,00.html ) section 1: Region 8 is included in the " Work that is able to be dome remotely MUST be done remotely." (Rather than the previous "Work that is able to be done remotely SHOULD be done remotely.") Amendment of EO 2020-184 (https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-540568--,00.html) , Section 6: Libraries are again required to limit overall occupancy to 25% of total occupancy for buildings with LESS than 50,000 sq. ft. Buildings with public space of 50,000 sq. ft. or more must limit to 20 people per 1,000 sq. ft.
