Good afternoon, Just wanted to send you information on our upcoming events at the Library-via Zoom Forest History, Then and Now (Via Zoom) October 19 from 6:30pm-8:00pm-Free Join us via Zoom as Mark Stormzand, forester and author of the book Stormy Outside : The Adventures and Misadventures of a Forester and His Dog, for an enlightening picture of the history and future of Michigan’s forests. We will learn about the history of the forests – who used to use them before the Europeans arrived, how they were utilized improperly, recovery efforts to bring them back, and how we can help conserve forests for the future. Just a reminder that the Library of Michigan has already purchased the PLA Early Literacy Calendar (featured in the PLA message below) for public libraries across Michigan. Library by appointment

Hi All! My library is currently offering curbside services only, but my tribe (we're a tiny tribal library!) is asking about possibly going to by-appointment only to allow patrons to come in to use the computers and briefly browse. For those libraries currently, or previously, offering by-appointment only entrance into your buildings, I hoped you could answer some questions: 1. What are you doing/how are you handling making appointments? Do patrons call in, set up an appointment online, use an app, etc.? 2. How long are your appointment times? How long in between appointment sessions? 3. Cleaning in between appointments? Or, just scheduled times (multiple) each day? 4. Do you offer appointments for computers only, with patrons being allowed to quickly browse stacks "as normal."? Or, are you offering for both browsing and computer use? 5. Any challenges that you've found doing by-appointment only? (Other than not being able to let people in when they want to come in). Thank you all so much for any help! Virtual Anti-loneliness Programs - a NNLM webinar

Loneliness is something our young adults and senior citizens might especially be experiencing at this time... Connections: Virtual Anti-loneliness Programs in the time of COVID-19<https://nnlm.gov/class/virtual-antiloneliness-programs-covid19/26910> Network of the National Library of Medicine Wednesday, Oct 7, 2020 2:00PM - 3:00PM CT (3pm ET) Loneliness and social isolation are rampant in America, according to many experts. The Center for Disease Control calls loneliness an epidemic and says it has a higher morbidity rate than obesity (about the same as smoking two packs of cigarettes a day). Studies have shown that loneliness cuts across all age, social, race, and economic demographics. We have many virtual friends, but few in reality. COVID-19 has exacerbated this problem. While many of the programs outlined are designed for in-person, there are ways public libraries can help combat loneliness even in a remote fashion. The Oceanside Library has created a program to combat social isolation/loneliness. The program, Connections, crosses all demographics and includes passive as well as active programming. The presentation will address: * Identification of existing programs which have an anti-loneliness component in them * Creation of programs which have anti-loneliness as a key function * Adjusting programs to have an anti-loneliness component * Dealing with COVID-related issues Tony Iovino has been the Assistant Director for Community Services for the Oceanside Library since January 2015. Prior to that, he was the head of litigation and managing partner for a law firm in Garden City that he started in 1986. Tony received his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond, his Juris Doctorate from St. John's University School of Law, and has completed a Master of Science in Library Science program at the University of Kentucky. Tony is a published author (Notary Public Enemy, Diversion Press) and poet. He served on the Oceanside School District Board of Education and has served as a director and attorney for dozens of non-profit and public boards. He and his wife of 40 years, Angela, have two grown daughters.
