Has anyone had JWs come and ask if they could put a cart of literature on library grounds? The two very nice people who spoke to me this morning told me I HAD to allow it because all Federal Buildings are Free Speech Zones. Is this true? Has anyone else had this question? The successful candidate will lead this pioneering and dynamic Library serving the 322,000 residents of the City of Lexington and Fayette County, KY through its six locations and its virtual services. The seven member Board of Trustees seeks an inspired and gifted Executive Director, who will continue the Library's stellar programs while developing and implementing new service models. The Executive Director of the Lexington Public Library reports to a seven member Board of Trustees and an eleven-member Board of Advisors. The ED performs highly responsible administrative and professional library work of complex difficulty in directing all operations and activities of the Lexington Public Library system, a multi-site, comprehensive service system serving the City of Lexington, County of Fayette, and surrounding communities. The Director plans, organizes, directs, evaluates, and reviews the Library's resources, services, and programs. Work is accomplished through collaboration with key team members who manage various organizational elements. Overall responsibilities include fostering effective internal and external communications; providing sound fiscal management while strengthening current funding sources and seeking additional revenue sources; continuing to support and promote a shared vision for library service and programming; and developing collaborative relationships with a variety of local, regional, and statewide organizations and agencies. Minimum qualifications include a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program (supplemented by coursework in management and administration) and extensive experience in professional library management (some at the executive level); or any equivalent combination of experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Essential attributes include personal integrity and excellent interpersonal skills; a thorough knowledge of financial management; collaboration and consensus-building skills; sensitivity, flexibility, and creativity; a sense of humor; and a solid understanding of philosophy, trends and "best practices" in library and nonprofit leadership. Prior successful experience reporting to and working effectively with a governing board and experience with and an appetite for financial development is highly desirable. The Executive Director must have or qualify for Kentucky Certification of Librarianship. Compensation. The position offers a starting salary range of $130,000 - 160,000 (dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an excellent fringe benefits package. Free Metal Discs and Tags

Hello, A bit of an odd giveaway, if anyone is interested! In the past we used metal tags as collectibles for summer reading, and I have two large boxes left of a mix of round and dog tag style tags, most of them have stickers on them. Charter Township Library Legislation- HB4119

Yesterday (Tuesday, June 18, 2019), Governor Whitmer signed HB 4119 HB4119 amends section 13a,( MCL 42.13a<http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-42-13a> ) of The Charter Township Act, which is the section that authorizes Charter Townships to establish Public Libraries. This amendment will enable Township Libraries that are currently established under a repealed act to RE-ESTABLISH as a Charter Township Library. This means, for example, that Township Libraries located in Charter Townships that are currently established under the 1955 School Code (1955 PA 269) (which was repealed in 1976), can, under this amendment, be re-established by their Charter Township as a Charter Township Library, and no longer operate under a repealed act. While it will only likely affect a few libraries, this amendment is a welcome solution for those libraries that will benefit. You tell him and he nods and goes to sit at nearby table, where he just stares at you for the next two hours . . . A female comes in and tells you she is living on the streets. She asks if she can use your restroom. She goes inside and locks the door. An hour later and she's still in there . . . A group of local teenagers come into your library and start messing with your displays, rolling the book carts around, and making noise. You ask them to leave and they refuse . . . A man show is angry at the county comes into your library to ask you for legal advice. When you tell him you cannot give him that type of help, he takes a gun out of his backpack and places it on the counter. If you work in a city or county library in an active neighborhood in a larger community, you would know how to address each of these by getting help from a co-worker, by asking a supervisor to speak to these people, by disengaging and doing your work at another part of the facility, or even by going into a back room and calling the police from a safe place. However, if you work in a rural library location--which can be defined as having a police or sheriff's response that could be 20 minutes to an hour away, working alone in the building, or working in a one-room facility, with only one way in or out--these options aren't always available. We are working towards providing one on our websites but are curious as to who is allowed to have their events on the calendar and any issues that you might have encountered along the way.
