Hello, Thank you to everyone who responded to my request for information about your Book Club Kits programs! I am sending out a summary of the responses to Michlib-l. Many libraries sent me photos of their book club kits. I can send those to anyone by request (I don't think I can attached or embed images in Michlib-l posts). See below: *Brighton District Library* "I'm attaching a photo of one of our book club kits. We purchased them from 4imprint.com (item 123181) for about $300 for 50 bags. We've only had them for a few months, so I can't speak to their durability, yet. Before these bags, we had the kits in canvas totes and they always looked messy sitting on the shelf. We really like that these will stand up on their own" *Hamburg Township Library* "We have purchased net bags from Amazon (see attached). The books are from our own library book club. As soon as we have our book discussion, we package up the materials and put them out for circulation. Each kit includes 6 books, laminated discussion questions, and laminated author information. The kits are labeled as “Book Club Kit” and circulate for 6 weeks at a time." *Commerce Township Community Library* "Hi Dillon, I asked the same question last year and didn't get much response so I am for sure answering you. I did a lot of searching and found a company that can custom make the bags for us. They are very sturdy bags and I had them put the plastic pocket on the front so that patrons could recognize the book at a glance. They are actually banking bags if you can believe it. I'm attaching pictures of the bags with our imprint on them. I think they came out to around $20 per bag, but so worth it. I chose blue but they have many colors to choose from. They check out for 6 weeks and whoever checks it out is responsible for returning everything in the bag in good condition. Each one contains 10 paperback copies of the same book (sometimes 11 if we can get a large print copy) and 3 laminated sheets: discussion questions, rules of use and a sign out sheet in a canvas bag. Each book is labeled 1-10 on the spine, so they can keep track of who has what book. The bags have a string sewed into the bag with a ring attached that we can put a laminated tag with a punch on it. The tag has the name and author on one side and the other side has the barcode and how many items in the kit. There is also a check in note on our circulation system with the number of items the kit contains and staff have to verify the number of item when its checked in or out. Please see the pictures below. Let me know if you have any questions. I forgot to include that we order our bags from a company called Amsterdam out of New York. https://www.amsterdamprinting.com/ " *Troy Public Library* "We ordered the bags from Business Image Experts in Livonia (most recent quote attached). The bags aren’t cheap, but they are very durable (heavy-duty canvas with zipper closure). We have been happy with how well they’ve held up. For the tags, we have a photo of the book cover + barcode on one side, and the circulation info on the reverse. We put them in badge holders and they are attached to the kit bags with zip ties. I’ve attached photos of the bag and tag as well." *Southfield Public Library* "I don't whether anyone from Southfield PL has responded yet, so if they have, just ignore my email. But, we have bookclub kits. We just shelve our copies on the shelve and have a QR code on the cover image above the books that people can scan that will lead them directly to a list of questions on our website. IF they don't use QR, then we can direct them to the webpage that the questions are on. We don't use any packaging. People are free to choose however many books they want to checkout for their personal bookclub. We just remind them that if they pass them out to their friends or family, they are still responsible for the books because they borrowed them on their library card, not their friends'. So we have a separate collection that we process as Bookclub books*."* *Clinton-Macomb Public Library* "We at the Clinton Macomb Public Library have kits for checkout. We use bowling-bag style bags from Rifkin (I can’t find them on the site, but we did reorder recently) that zip. We have ten copies of the book plus a folder with questions in the bag. Often books have been catalogued for individual checkout, since we make kits from books used for in-house discussions. We then make those items non-circulating, basically. Registration for the 2019-20 Great Michigan Read - What the Eyes Don't See by Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha - is underway, and we wanted to pass along a reminder that libraries, schools, colleges, book clubs, arts and cultural institutions, and other organizations around the state are now able to register as partners via our online system. Call for Volunteers - 2020 Loleta Fyan Small & Rural Libraries Conference Steering Committee

It's that time again! Planning for the 2020 Loleta Fyan Small & Rural Libraries Conference has already started. Our next SRLC will be April 13-April 15, 2020 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan. The Library of Michigan is looking for energetic volunteers to fill key roles on the steering committee for the 2020 Small & Rural Libraries Conference. The Small & Rural Libraries Conference has a long tradition of providing a forum for the staff, trustees, and advocates of Michigan's small and rural libraries to share, learn and be inspired to provide the best library service to their communities. The steering committee as a whole will serve as the program committee. Responsibilities will include evaluating program proposals and aiding in determining the agenda for the conference. Each member of the steering committee will also serve as chair for the following vital and valued sub-committees: Volunteers, Hospitality, Awards, Vendors and Fun & Games. Each of the chairs will be responsible for selecting committee members to work with during the planning stages of the conference and at SRLC itself. Steering committee members will exercise considerable independent judgment in the work of their committees while collaborating with the Library of Michigan in the planning and organization of this conference. The first meeting of the steering committee will be this summer. Connecting Michigan Communities Grant

The CMIC Grant Program is a competitive one-time grant program. Twenty million dollars have been set aside by the State of Michigan to extend broadband service to unserved areas of Michigan. The application deadline is 4:00 p.m. EST on Friday, August 30, 2019. Applicants should email their applications and all attachments in PDF format to DTMBCMICGrant(a)michigan.gov<mailto:DTMBCMICGrant@michigan.gov>. Elaborate applications are not necessary or desired. The CMIC Grant Program can pay up to 90% of the eligible costs for a qualifying project. "Broadband deployment costs" or "costs" means the cost of the acquisition and installation of middle-mile and last-mile infrastructure that support broadband service with a minimum speed of 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. Last mile infrastructure is broadband infrastructure that serves as the final leg connecting the broadband service provider's network to the end-use customer's on-premise telecommunications equipment. Middle mile infrastructure is broadband infrastructure that links a broadband service provider's core network infrastructure to last-mile infrastructure. Construction of broadband infrastructure may include any of the following: project planning; obtaining construction permits; construction of facilities, including construction of both "middle mile" and "last mile" infrastructure; equipment; and installation and testing of the broadband service. The Innovation Lab Coordinator will support the mission of the Library by overseeing this new program. Key responsibilities include developing and managing the Innovation Lab, coordinating programming and other duties as it applies to the Library's Innovation Lab, developing innovative programming, training, scheduling and supervising Innovation Lab staff and volunteers as well as maintaining all supplies, materials and equipment; and collaborating with local maker individuals and organizations to develop strong partnerships and meet community needs. Hello, Some time back I asked for recommendations on people counters, as I had received proposals from TrafSys and Sensource. I received the 4 responses below: 1) We switched from old feet level counters to the TrafSys overhead PoE thermal counters just over a year ago. I can't comment on SenSource but so far we have been happy with TrafSys. - The server software is rather basic but the interface is usable. We have it email building counts to those who need it so most never have to login and look at it (other than monthly board stats). - We went for the PoE models since ethernet is rather cheap to run and dependable. - You can set up 'events' in the software so it is easier to see stats around a specific program to see trends. - The model we have has in and out stats so if you have multiple entrances and exits it can give you a better idea of traffic flow. - The sensors store days worth of data so if you have reporting software issues you haven't lost the data. I've also had a good experience with their support. We recently had an issue with the reporting software and daylight savings. They responded quickly that they had tracked down the issue, gave us a workaround and we were up and running again quickly. It was also able to recover all the data that was missing in the meantime. 2) I put in a AMSECO VDP-100 Video-Eye People Counter a few years ago. It has been very reliable, haven't had to touch it since it was mounted. We have never had a maintenance contract only paid for the unit and I installed it. 3) We use a simple infrared counter from https://wecountpeople.com/ they have more sophisticated counters than the ones we use, but if cost is an issue, the battery lasts about a year and they are compact and unobtrusive. 4) The Hamburg Township Library has been with SenSource since Nov. 2013. Their service is always fast to response and can remotely assist our computer tech here on site. I receive daily reports in Excel and transfer the information to our Excel report to prepare our in house monthly reports. Very easy for me to operate. Our annual support is $240.00 per year.
