The Frances Willson Thompson Library at the University of Michigan - Flint is currently seeking candidates to fill two librarian positions. We are looking for flexible, self-motivated, enthusiastic individuals to engage in liaison work, instruction, public service and other projects as needed. These positions will hire in at the assistant librarian level. Cathy, Library of Michigan We have used a variety sterlite, ziploc and some off brands without any issues. If it feels cheap I don't purchase it. In some cases being able to stack them is a priority if we have multiple items with similar contents, sometimes the priority is the size needed to fit an unusual item. other times having a handle for a bulky/heavy item takes priority. The items are often checked out and we have only had one issue with a case. Have fun! We love having the unusual items to offer. Brenda, Highland I bought the IRIS 12 quart "stack and pull" style with a locking lid. It's not quite the same as their weather tight style, but figured they're probably somewhat similar. We were able to get them for a nice price on Amazon, they're more sturdy than the basic flimsy plastic box, they stack great, and I love the handles. However, one (out of six) did get a crack in it's lid while it was being shuffled between library branches, so they're not super sturdy. Each year, the Historical Society of Michigan presents two awards at the Upper Peninsula History Conference: the Charles Follo Award for individuals and the Superior Award for historical organizations based in the Upper Peninsula. The awards recognize individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the preservation and promotion of U.P. history. The 2019 Charles Follo Award-named in honor of Charles Follo, a school teacher from Escanaba who worked to establish historical societies and promote the history of the Upper Peninsula-is presented to Frederick Stonehouse of Marquette, Michigan. Stonehouse has written more than 30 books on maritime history, and his articles have appeared in numerous publications. He has served as a consultant for both the U.S. National Park Service and Parks Canada and appeared on television as an on-air expert for National Geographic, History Channel and Fox Family. Stonehouse holds a master's degree in history from Northern Michigan University and has returned to the university as an instructor. He also plays an active role in the Marquette community, where he serves as the city's mayor. The Historical Society of Michigan established the Superior Award in 2006 to recognize historical societies, museums and other historical organizations that have preserved and advanced U.P. history. This year's recipient is the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. In 1896, Finnish immigrants founded Suomi College (now Finlandia University) in Hancock to perpetuate the Finnish language and culture in North America. In 1990, the Finnish American Heritage Center opened its doors on the Suomi College campus. The center serves as a cultural focal point and a national hub for exhibits, lectures, musical performances and community programs. It is also the home of the Finnish American Historical Archive, the Finnish American Folk School and the monthly newspaper The Finnish American Reporter. The center has produced two video documentaries and published two books. The Upper Peninsula History Conference pays particular attention to U.P. history topics and themes. The conference moves to a different location in the Upper Peninsula each year to explore that area's heritage. The 2019 Upper Peninsula History Conference's major sponsor is The Meijer Foundation. Poetry Out Loud in Michigan: registration opens this summer

Good morning from Michigan Humanities, Later this summer, we will launch our online registration for Poetry Out Loud, a national high school poetry recitation program that we've been coordinating in Michigan for 15 years. We would love to have your help identifying potential high school partners across the state! If you currently work with high schools who may be interested in taking part, please feel free to spread the word to them. What is Poetry Out Loud? Poetry Out Loud is a FREE poetry memorization and recitation competition curriculum that teachers can incorporate into their classroom. Poetry Out Loud encourage students to learn about poetry, master public speaking skills, and build self-confidence. Students compete at the state and national level to win money for themselves and their school, and for the title of Poetry Out Loud Champion. Teachers would implement this program in their classrooms in early fall or winter. PLEASE SHARE WIDELY Call for Papers: Research on Diversity in Youth Literature 3.1 Special Issue on Minstrelsy and Racist Appropriation in Youth Literature and Culture Research on Diversity in Youth Literature (RDYL) announces a call for papers for a special issue on minstrelsy and racist appropriation in youth literature and culture. Scheduled to publish in June 2020, RDYL 3.1 will be guest edited by Dr. Brigitte Fielder (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Dr. Katrina Phillips (Macalester College). RYDL is a peer-reviewed, online, open-access journal hosted by St. Catherine University’s Master of Library and Information Science Program and University Library. Children’s literature and popular culture are key to the production of racism. Young people encounter depictions and performances of race in a myriad of forms, often in ways that appropriate and misrepresent non-White people. Given the overwhelming whiteness of children’s literary and popular culture in the U.S., it is clear how such misrepresentations risk overshadowing non-White people’s presence, resistance to racial oppression, and self-representation. Children’s literature and popular culture contributes to minstrelsy, blackface, redface, yellowface, and other forms of racist caricature and performance. This special issue calls contributors to consider the various forms that minstrelsy and racist appropriation take in youth literature, popular culture, and performance. What are the most prominent genres in which these forms of depiction and performance appear? How do forms of racism translate across genres, and how is performance, in particular, implied in other adaptations of minstrel themes? How do the histories of these forms of racism reflect their specific moments and how did they affect the people they misrepresented? How do present iterations of minstrelsy and racist appropriation either replicate or diverge from their earlier forms? We are also interested in work that counters these histories of appropriation. How do non-White writers push against these stereotypes and constructions? Where is the most productive work (in literature, popular culture, or academic writing) against these racist forms? How might we better navigate these as researchers, scholars, librarians, educators, parents and caregivers, and others who seek to prioritize the interests of the children (and adults) who are adversely affected by racist appropriation? RDYL seeks papers that treat youth literature and culture from any time period (including the present) and treatments of minstrelsy and racist appropriation in its array of forms, from text to visual culture to performance. We welcome submissions from a wide variety of fields, including (though not limited to) literary studies, library studies, youth education, performance studies, media studies, American Studies, and history. Interdisciplinary essays that center ethnic studies methodologies are particularly welcome.
