Call for Nominations for the 2019 CSLP Elections Dear CSLP State Representatives and CSLP Members, The Nominating and Leadership Development Committee is seeking nominations for election to the CSLP Board, with terms beginning January 2020. The open positions are: President-elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Committee Chair, Vendor Chair, two At-Large Positions, and the Chair of the Children's Program Committee. All terms are two-year terms, except the President-elect, who will serve a year as President and a year as Past-President after their year as President-elect, for a total of three years. We are seeking nominations through April 30, 2019. We have created a Google form at http://bit.ly/CSLP2020Nominations<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FCS…> so you can self-nominate, or if you know someone you would like to nominate, please consider doing so! The Nominating and Leadership Development Committee will follow up with everyone who is nominated. Elections will take place at the Annual Meeting in Indianapolis during the third week of September. CSLP encourages active participation of our members. If you are interested in serving on the Board but don't yet know about the commitment, please reach out to any member of the Board or the Nominating and Leadership Development Committee. If you have been involved with CSLP for a short period of time, you may be interested in serving as an At-Large Board Member. That is a great way to jump in and become more familiar with how the Board functions! The Board also encourages CSLP members to attend our monthly Board Meetings. We meet online on the first Wednesday of the month via video-conference using the Zoom platform. Karen Day sends out a link to the meeting about a week in advance of the meeting. Please consider joining us for the March Board Meeting on 6th! If you aren't quite ready to run for a position on the Board, there are a number of committees that you can join. The CSLP's ad hoc Child and Community Well-Being committee is developing resources to support and encourage library participation in the USDA's Summer Food Service Program and other initiatives to help kids and teens stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. Summer lunch is great! You have to find the model that works for you. I don't want to discourage anyone from trying it. We tried several ways before we found one that the community liked and that worked well for us. We are self-prep and self-funded! Being simply a site is the easiest; if your school district will sponsor you, it's even easier because they are used to all the paperwork. Keep in mind the saying: "have food, kids will come" and build your summer reading program around it. We have our story times and activities close to lunch, so kids come for one and stay for the other. Take advantage of possibilities and partnerships to make this beneficial for your library as well. We are small - about 1200 in our town and 2400 in our taxing area - and rural, so our biggest problem is getting kids to the library to eat. Still, we have been hugely successful. Our slowest days we served about 20 lunches, and during the summer we served 190 different kids. My advice is jump in slowly and try to involve some folks that will help you make decisions and who see the big picture, including the library's situation and involvement. Inclusion Corner - Multilingual Women's History Month Storytime by Kathryn Baumgartner Every month, there are a plethora of observances that take place in the United States, as well as internationally. Wikipedia has a handy list of them, which may be found here<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikiped…>. These observances are an excellent opportunity for librarians to celebrate diversity and educate the public on everything from Alzheimer's Disease to Native American Heritage. There are a number of observances assigned to each month, but my busy programming schedule does not allow me time to hold a separate event for all of them. Rather than choose one group or cause over another, I find ways I can combine as many of them as possible into one program. My format of choice is a storytime followed by a craft, as I am primarily a children's librarian. However, it is certainly possible to adapt these programs for a teen or adult audience. The month of March is both Women's History Month and National Foreign Language Month. In order to incorporate both, I decided to select picture books about famous women from around the world, written in both English and the native language of the heroine. The first step was choosing which languages to use. My own language skills are limited to English, Spanish, and German. The latter is not prevalent in my library's community, which is largely Asian American, so I determined the languages that would make the most sense were English, Spanish, and Chinese. Unable to speak or read Chinese, I decided to draw on the talents of my coworkers. Several of the clerks at my branch speak Chinese as a first language, and enthusiastically agreed to help out. [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/19fc8238-76e…] With the languages selected, choosing books, music, and a craft was much easier. Although some children in the community are bilingual, I did not want to make the storytime inaccessible to those who are not. With that in mind, I selected books that contained a combination of English and either Chinese or Spanish, as well as some books entirely in English. The books I selected are: She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton and Young, Gifted, and Black by Jamia Wilson, both of which I only used excerpts of; Frida and Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx, both by Jonah Winter; Mulan by Li Jian; and The Girl Emperor of China: The Story of Wu Zetian by Jillian Lin. The audience for this program is upper elementary students, though siblings are welcome. Although this is a slightly older audience than I would normally do fingerplays and nursery rhymes with, I decided that songs like "If You're Happy and You Know It" would be useful for teaching words in other languages. For example, replacing "happy" with "contento" increases the audience's Spanish vocabulary, and setting it to music will help them remember it. I found StoryBlocks.org<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.storyb…> to be a useful resource when selecting songs and rhymes. Wanting to continue to combine the month's themes, and wishing to give children a way to remember some of the new words they have learned, I created a craft that would accomplish both: A thank you card written to a woman who has inspired them, with "thank you" written in English, Chinese, and Spanish. Kids may use crayons, markers, and embellishments such as sequins and feathers to decorate the card however they choose. Launch into STAR Net's "Summer of Space"! Looking to gain library experience while working on your M.L.S. or M.L.I.S.? The Comstock Township Library has a paid, temporary position which will run from the middle of April until the first week of September. This position will mostly work the reference desk under the supervision of the reference staff. Learn to catalog utilizing RDA standards, assist patrons with readers' advisory, assist with programs, and learn the resources and subject headings to utilize when aiding patrons with reference questions. The potential candidate must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed and have a flexible schedule. Coursework in reference and cataloging is preferred and enrollment in library school is required. Starting wage is $12.50 an hour. MeL Minute: World Book Webquests

[A close up of text on a white background Description automatically generated]World Book Webquests, available through the World Book Kids digital database, teach responsible digital citizenship, strong research skills, and critical and analytical thought-all while making learning an adventure! Webquests are print-and-do activities that take learners on expeditions through World Book Kids. By following the step-by-step routes through the database, students learn by reading text, studying images, and hearing sound (including text read aloud to them). Along the way, students of all learning types practice basic database research skills. In the classroom or as part of library programming, a teacher or librarian simply needs to print out and distribute a WebQuest, and students can begin their self-directed exploration. New Webquests on topics ranging from sports to space are added often to ensure that the activity appeals to every student. Webquests approach every topic in ways that make the information approachable, digestible, and engaging for all students. Learners are prompted to imagine that they are right in the action of the topic that they're exploring: navigating Ancient Egypt, preparing to blast off as an astronaut, swimming alongside blue whales, and more! The Webquests begin broadly, providing learners with a foundational understanding of the topic and its context. Then, students deep-dive into specifics. Each WebQuest incorporates multimedia features to ensure understanding from every angle, and the question formats include true or false, fill in the blank, open ended, and more to keep learners continuously engaged. Correlated by grade range, Webquests can be easily integrated into classroom curricula or used as supplemental guides for exploration. Brought to you by the MeL Team. Greetings from Lansing -- The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) invites you to the Poetry Out Loud State Finals taking place this week on March 1 and 2 at the Lansing Crowne Plaza. As you may know, Poetry Out Loud<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/poetry-out-loud-3/> is a national high school poetry recitation contest that MHC coordinates through a partnership with the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support is generously provided by Meijer and the Liesel Litzenburger Meijer Fund. I've attached a flyer that shares some additional details about the program and our 2019 schedule, including the timeframes for each round of competition. Job Posting Job Title: Emerging Technologies Librarian (Woods Branch) - Full Time Reports to: Branch Manager Department: Adult Services Job Responsibilities: * Provide reference and reader's advisory to patrons, through use of print and electronic resources * Provide patron assistance and instruction in the use of library computers, catalog, electronic resources, digital downloads and Wi-Fi * Supervise library environment to maintain safety and fair enforcement of library policies * Collaborate with colleagues to identify, recommend and implement emerging technology for adoption by the library * Participate in emerging tech-related outreach to the public library community * Perform ongoing evaluation of digital resources to assess use, usability and value * Support and manage access to the Library's digital resources * Provide technology training to staff as needed in cooperation with Information Technology department * Creation and posting of content to website and online calendar, when necessary * In cooperation with Adult Services team, present culturally relevant and thought- provoking programs to the community * Encourage and promote communication, collaboration and excellent customer service throughout the library * Work positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish Library goals * Participate in the selection of appropriate print and electronic resources for the Library, with a focus on reflecting the growing cultural diversity of the community * Other duties as assigned Qualifications: * Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (or equivalent) from ALA accredited university. * Enthusiasm for serving the public * Knowledge of and ability to apply collection development principles and techniques * Ability to effectively plan and organize work * Familiarity with electronic methods and resources to analyze collections * Effective oral and written communication skills * Ability to work successfully in a team environment * Knowledge and enthusiasm for emerging information technologies and trends * Knowledge of automated library systems and equipment * Knowledge of current publishing practices and consumer use * Familiarity with developing and managing collection budgets SALARY Starting Salary: $49,225 This full-time position is currently at the Woods branch. Location of position could change at any time.
