But what if all of these assumptions are wrong? It turns out they are! In this webinar, you will discover why these reasons are old fashioned, incorrect notions that create a barrier for many people. You will hear how eliminating fines can lead to an increase in library use and circulation, with no negative effects. Presenters Beth Crist and Meg DePriest will review the research and results from the growing number of libraries across the country that have ditched late fines and coaxed new and former users to their doors. They will discuss how to gather your libraries' data and patron stories to create advocacy tools. They will share talking points, tips, and an advocacy tool you can use to build a case to eliminate fines in your library. It's a win-win for your library and community! Presenter Info: Frances Maloy, College Librarian, Union College, Schenectady, NY Frances is the College Librarian at Union College in Schenectady, NY since 2012. In this role she oversees all functions of the Schaffer Library, Adirondack Research Library, Union College Permanent Collection and Mandeville Gallery. Prior to Union, Maloy was first Head of Access Services and then Leader for Public Services at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia from 1992-2012. Maloy began her career at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. She was the 2004-2005 ACRL President and the President of the Oberlin Group in 2016. Maloy is the mother of 3 teenage children and founded the ACRL discussion group, Balancing Baby and Book to give professional librarians a place to share experiences, support each other and effect change. Tim Burke, Executive Director, Upper Hudson Library System, Albany, NY Tim Burke is the Executive Director of the Upper Hudson Library System in Albany, NY. His 30+ year career in the profession includes service, management and leadership experience in academic libraries, public libraries, and library systems. He earned his MLS from the University of Buffalo. He is active in many statewide organizations and committees working to improve and enhance the New York library community, most significantly the New York Library Association, where he's just finishing a term as the NYLA President. Librarian, SUBSTITUTE Roseville Public Library Salary Range: $19.00 - $20.00 per hour – NO BENEFITS The Roseville Public Library is an integral part of the dynamic City of Roseville, assisting over 100,000 visitors each year. HOURS: A variety of shifts as needed. DUTIES * Works in both the Adult and Youth Area assisting patrons. * Assists patrons with technology questions and downloading digital content. * Receives requests and concerns from patrons. Resolves issues or informs immediate supervisor. * Assists with special projects. * Performs related duties and general library work as required. REQUIREMENTS * Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university. Applicants must submit proof of degree with application and official transcript at time of interview. * Enthusiasm for public service to all ages. * Provide reference assistance and readers advisory to all ages. * Ability to use library-related technology, Microsoft Office Suite, social media and mobile devices and instruct patrons of all ages in their use. * Be able to communicate effectively with patrons and staff. * Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record (based on City of Roseville standards). * As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a background check and pre-employment physical. * The job requires moderate physical exertion such as sitting or standing in one position, viewing a computer screen for long periods and using hands and fingers in activities requiring good coordination and dexterity. The job also requires the physical strength and dexterity to handle up to 50 pounds in weight, transport loaded carts and bend and lift arms overhead. PREFERENCES * Recent library experience. * Knowledge and skill in using Integrated Library Software, such as SirsiDynix.
