Pickford Community Library Earns State and National Honors in 2019 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

PICKFORD COMMUNITY LIBRARY RANKED NUMBER ONE ORGANIZATION IN MICHIGAN, NUMBER TWO LIBRARY IN NATION 2019 SCHOLASTIC SUMMER READING CHALLENGE Pickford, MI -- The Pickford Community Library has reason to celebrate! Our local readers made it the Number One organization in the state of Michigan among schools, libraries, and civic organizations, and the Number Two Library in the United States in the 2019 <http://www.scholastic.com/summer> Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Most importantly, the efforts of all readers worldwide led to the donation of 600,000 books to children in need. The Pickford Community Library coordinated and administrated the challenge for Pickford Public Schools, area homeschoolers, and participants from other Eastern Upper Peninsula schools. From May 6 to September 6, 179 area students read 381,097 minutes. In addition, the local community provided outstanding support for the library’s “piggyback rewards program” in which students earned in-house prizes all summer long. The Pickford Community Library will be featured in 2020 Scholastic Book of World Records for this nationwide honor and has received a commemorative plaque and a celebration kit to recognize student reading achievements. Students from all 50 states, two U.S. territories, and Washington, D.C., read 109,334,297 million minutes in the 2019 Challenge, a free, online summer reading program which aims to help students return to school reading-ready. It's designed to help kids turn the “summer slide” -- the learning loss which can occur over the summer months -- into a “summer leap” by discovering the power and joy of reading for fun. Good afternoon! We are once again hoping you can help us spread the word about the upcoming election on November 5. Many local communities across Michigan will be having elections that day. If possible, please post the attached flyer and share the following messages via your communication channels. As always, thank you for your help! Newsletter/website message Election Alert Many Michigan communities to host elections November 5 School districts and communities in 69 counties will hold elections on Tuesday, Nov. 5. To find out if your community has an election or to view a sample ballot, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center at www.michigan.gov/vote<http://www.michigan.gov/vote>. The polls will be open statewide from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you're not registered to vote, it's not too late. Changes passed by voters last November allow voter registration until 8 p.m. on Election Day at your city or township clerk's office. 2020 Census and my library

Hi Kathy, My library is currently categorized as a class III library. I think the results of the 2020 census will add enough people to put my library into a a class IV status. I am certified at a level III. My question to you is when will the 2020 census numbers go into effect? FYI, my library's FY year runs June - July. Will I need to obtain an MLS degree to remain library director here to qualify for state aid? I have a MLS library assistant working here but she is not the director. Would that make my library compliant? Or, does the director have to have a level 2 certification?
