Book Discussion Kit Questions

Hello Librarylanders! Jackson District Library is doing some research on how other library systems handle their Book Discussion Kits (Book Club Discussion Kits, etc.). We would like to thank several libraries who have already answered our questions, and are looking for more information specifically from multi-branch library systems. How do you handle the circulation of your kits? What kind of supplementary materials are in each kit? Do you take reservations and schedule the distribution of the kits? Do you catalog the kit with one bar code or is each item cataloged individually? Can patrons put kits on hold online? Either for the Branch Book Club or a patron that is picking it up? Lastly, what is your procedure for checking in/out the Book Kit? If it’s written down, would you be willing to share it? Thank you so much!! Larry Martin "In Their Own Words"

Hello Michigan Public Library users, The Jackson District Library is excited to announce the continuation of Larry Martin’s In Their Own Words at the Carnegie Branch of the Jackson District Library. If you have never seen this program, [ http://lmww2.com/ | Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words ] , I encourage you to attend our upcoming program. Better yet you could have library come to your library; which he is more than happy to do. Larry has been putting on this program for JDL for the past 11 years. In Their Own Words has drawn between 80 and 150 attendees per event. An estimated 4,600 people have come to hear the reflections and experiences of WWII veterans that Larry has interviewed. On Saturday, August 5th and Saturday September 9th , Larry will be sharing his interview with Bill Ingram, who fought in the Pacific in 1942 and was witness to the sinking of the Houston in March of that year. The second part continues with his story as a prisoner of war for 3 ½ years. As our former director stated “We deeply appreciate the dedication shown by Mr. Larry Martin for bringing these stories alive and are honored to be a partner in his efforts. Larry brings a wealth of knowledge to the program and has recorded scores of interviews with veterans over the past ten years. He passionately reminds his audiences that the freedoms they now take for granted were earned through the hard sacrifices of many thousands of veterans who fought in World War II”. FW: UPDATE: IMLS, LSTA, IAL Funds Uncut by House Appropriations Committee

I'm pleased to confirm that, after a marathon "markup" session lasting well into yesterday evening, the House Appropriations Committee has approved direct library funding language in the Labor-HHS spending bill identical to that included in last week's Subcommittee bill which makes no cuts in IMLS, LSTA or IAL funding relative to last year's levels. While errors in the details of the official Committee Report will need to be corrected (see excerpt in Word doc attached), we have been assured that the Subcommittee and Committee both voted to provide IMLS with $231 million, LSTA with $183.6 million and IAL with $27 million in FY 2018. That's reflected shown in our own Excel tracking chart, also attached. As discussed in the blog just posted<http://www.districtdispatch.org/2017/07/fy-2018-library-funding-remains-unc…> to District Dispatch, the House now appears unlikely to act on this funding bill (and all but a few others related to security/defense) before beginning its month-long August recess. The Senate, which will defer its recess by two weeks, could begin work on a Labor-HHS bill (that's unclear) but is virtually certain not to vote on it at any level until the fall. Once the bill adopted last night reaches the House floor this fall, amendments to the bill related to library funding are extremely unlikely. We will push hard in the Senate, however, for the full $186.6 million requested for LSTA in this year's House and Senate Dear Appropriator letters. We also will work closely in coalition with the many groups attempting to restore cuts made in programs in which libraries are among many other eligible recipients, such as the Department of Education's Striving Readers<https://www2.ed.gov/programs/strivingreaders-literacy/index.html> to assist children from birth through Grade 12. Given the procedural status and timing described above, the blog also underscores the importance of ongoing library funding advocacy over the summer while members of Congress are back in their home states and Districts. As the Cultural Center of Hartland, Hartland’s Cromaine is expected by its community to offer music and art, as well as all of the science, engineering and technology engagement possible for all ages. *Due to a promotion, we have a 20-hour Youth Services Librarian position *available with principal responsibilities with a focus on babies for story time and outreach programming, school visits, and collection development for sections of fiction, nonfiction, and/or media for youth. All of our Librarians are cross-trained for Adult, Youth, Teen, and Circulation. You may not run an adult regular book club, but you’ll probably assist with desk coverage in Adult, Teen, and at Circulation as well as some other programming (Grandparenting tech-based communication skills?) Keeping mice/keyboards

Calling on some collective wisdom here, we have an assortment of equipment in our computer room and I am attempting to clear some of it out. Our library has about 50 computers total – how many “extra” wired keyboards/mice do we really need to have on hand? I think I currently have enough to refurbish most if not all of the computers in the building J So, for those techies out there, how many do I really need - 10, 15, etc. ?
