New opportunity! Apply for the MI Library Harwood Public Innovators Lab (Nov 7-9) and follow-up training

The Library of Michigan<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan> and MCLS are pleased to announce a third opportunity for Michigan library staff to participate in Harwood Institute training. This opportunity will include a full 2.5-day Public Innovators Lab<http://theharwoodinstitute.org/lab/> followed by 18 months of coaching. The training will be led by coaches from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation<http://www.theharwoodinstitute.org/>. It will be robust, extensive, and is being offered at no charge to selected Michigan libraries, with generous stipends provided through Library of Michigan LSTA funding. * Applications must be submitted by 5pm Eastern (4pm Central) August 31, 2017. * Notification to recipients will be on or before September 13, 2017. Homebound Delivery/Outreach policy

Hello all! I am looking for insight into library policies from those who do homebound delivery and outreach services. Who delivers the books--does a staff member drive a car or do you have a transport service through your library system or cooperative? How do you handle due dates? Overdues? Do you cap the number of people or residencies you serve at one time? Would anyone be willing to share written policies regarding homebound service? Answers to these questions and any other relevant information would be appreciated! I can also compile answers if other parties are interested. Charging station for patron's devices

Hello Everyone, I have been asked many times in the last few years if I have a charging cord for a variety of devices by patrons, so we are thinking of creating an electronic device charging station with cords for our patron's devices. We would buy a cord for apple devices, android devices. We are trying to figure out a way that the cords can't be unplugged from the charging strip/device. We are also hoping that we wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on this and it has to be able to be moved to a new building. If you have one at your library: 1. Did you create something or did you buy something? If so, what? 2. Is it being used at your library? Or do patrons still prefer to plug their device into random outlets? Technical Services Specialist The Henry Ford, located in Dearborn, Michigan, has an opportunity for a part-time Technical Services Specialist. The Technical Services Specialist is responsible for performing a variety of technical duties to support functions of the Library. Works as part of the team responsible for providing access to the collections of The Henry Ford. Responsible for a variety of collections services in the Reading Room; assisting and orienting both public and internal clientele. Participates in special projects and collections work as assigned. 1. Participates in the acquisition of materials, including purchasing, cataloging, and processing books, trade literature, periodicals, microforms, journals, databases and videos. Tracks expenses for Library budget. 2. Generates interlibrary loan requests to other libraries on behalf of THF staff. Fulfills interlibrary loan requests from other libraries. 3. Perform a variety of library collection maintenance tasks, such as: daily shelving, shelf reading, searching for missing items, shifting collections, identification of collection material in need of preservation or reorganization. 4. Greet and register all clients. Provide an overview of services and policies. Answer reference questions about the collections and refer questions to Reference Staff as needed. 5. Introduce and explain circulation procedures to clientele. Use library system software to check books in and out to eligible clientele and generate notices. Record registration and circulation statistics. 6. Using the integrated library system, the EMu content management system, manual catalogs and finding aids, assist clientele to identify and request collection materials. 7. Create timely, informative written material which reflects the Mission and Vision of The Henry Ford and aligns with institutional communications policies. Incorporate images, video files and links to collections records which enhance the presentation of the topic and the user experience. 8. Performs other activities as requested. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Requires a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience. Ability to engage all levels of a diverse user community in a congenial and productive way. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experienced with collection management systems, library information systems, and Microsoft Office software. Familiar with library and/or archival catalogs and finding aids. Strong attention to detail; dependable and flexible work habits. Ability to set and continually readjust priorities while responding efficiently to multiple service requests. SPECIAL SKILLS Strong coursework in or knowledge of U.S. History. Coursework in Information/Library Science or Archival Studies. Deep knowledge of library information systems functionality and operation. workstation pads

Hello, Two years ago we installed 3m workstation pads for our book/item security system. We've had so many issues with them and I am wondering if anyone out there has experienced this also. Check-in/Check-out is so inconsistent, and patrons have to come back to get re-checked out as they get "beeped" by our gate. We've had service, and they could not find any issues, of course. Are there any other companies out there that might work with our self check out and gate system? Any fixes you've found to work with the pads? Julie Grynwich, Director New Buffalo Twp.
