Canton Public Library currently has a new position open with the Circulation Services Department (now through July 05, 2017.) POSITION SUMMARY Under the management of the Circulation Services Department Head, the Page is responsible for accurate and efficient check in, reshelving, and retrieval of library materials. The Page may assist other staff to perform clerical duties associated with managing the hold shelf and processing circulation notices and assisting library patrons as necessary. Due to the varied responsibilities, this position is differentiated by grade, based on job functions. This position is classified as a regular part-time position and is non-exempt from overtime. The nature of the work requires evening and weekend hours. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Regularly empty book drops and bins according to established schedule, or more frequently as directed. * Examine materials for completeness and condition and follow established procedures for processing. * Accurately check in items using the library's automated system. * Place items in correct location on library shelves, hold shelves, appropriate carts, or other appropriate area, following established procedures. * Maintain correct order on library shelves by periodically performing shelf reading. While shelving, correct shelving errors as they are discovered. * Maintain established shelving quota. * Explain to patrons the purchase and use of copy cards, and assist in their use. * Assist patrons who ask for help in public areas, referring them to other staff or departments as needed. * Assess and direct workflow in Sorting Area as needed. * Assist in opening or closing of library (specific shifts). * Maintain neat and orderly library appearance throughout each shift. * Stay informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contribute content as appropriate. * Enforce library policies using a polite and professional approach. * Accept special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Basic general knowledge and ability to respond to simple oral and written communication, such as typically gained through a high school education. * Ability to accurately sort and shelf alphabetically and numerically. * Ability to work independently without close supervision after training is complete. * Ability to operate computers and computer software. * Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions. * Punctuality and dependability. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. * Ability to maintain discretion in handling confidential library matters. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Prior experience in a public library or comparable customer service experience. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Sufficient physical agility to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, sit, lift up to 25 lbs., and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to grab, hold, and shelve materials and read small print on labels. * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally. * Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment. Old Card Catalog

Hello, I'm on the look out for an old card catalog that has ~30 shelves. My library is planning to open a seed library, and I'd love to use an old card catalog to house the seeds. If you have any leads, I'd love to know! I check eBay regularly but haven't found one that's just the right fit for us. Thanks! Shelves in Adult area

Happy Monday! We are looking at a possible new building for Three Rivers Public Library. Our design team said that libraries are using shorter shelves. In our current library, our shelves in our adult space are 90 in. tall. What are the tallest shelves in your library? One of my Board members would like to see photos from libraries who are using shorter shelves, so if you could share a photo I would appreciate it. */Cromaine Is the Cultural Center of Hartland…and our community appreciates that!/* With construction nearly complete for a 3800 square foot addition, we finally have spaces for our staff to continue to create new and innovate traditional library services and collections. As the Cultural Center of Hartland, Hartland’s Cromaine is expected by its community to offer music and art, as well as all of the science, engineering and technology engagement possible for all ages. *We have a 20-hour Adult Services Librarian position *available with principal responsibilities for magazines, technology instruction, and collection development for sections of fiction and nonfiction for adults. All of our Librarians are cross-trained for Adult, Youth, Teen, and Circulation. You may not do a story time, but you’ll probably assist with desk coverage in Youth and at Circulation as well as some other programming (Quidditch Tournament anyone?) This year Hartland’s Cromaine celebrates its 90^th year of service with a big splash September 29 and 30. *We are the place to connect—with warm and friendly staff, the Web, and the community. If that’s your desire, interest, and future vision, too, then we need you! * Cromaine District Library is located near the intersection of M-59 and US-23—easy to get to from Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Flint. Hartland’s Cromaine (built in 1927, expanded in 1980, and again this year, 2017) has the elegant Community Room, a large physical collection and large digital collection, plus two new smaller meeting rooms, a new Youth Program Room, and three new study rooms as a result of the little addition to this building. *We also have a serious commitment to outreach, participating in many events and exhibits beyond our walls* as well as finding new ways to be active outside this building in a busy community. Cromaine wins grants, including several National Endowment for the Arts’ The Big Read. Grants for technology in Youth, local business sponsorships for an expanded summer concert series, exhibits from the Smithsonian and to be a pilot for a national grant program—we are a place to connect to culture, music, technology, makers, as well as reading in every format. *Many of the grants support a very full event calendar* (check It out at WWW.CROMAINE.ORG).We are an OverDrive (TLN’s Download Destination) plus Advantage, hoopla, and Zinio library.
