A while back I posted about the fact that we were having problems faxing to the State of Michigan Unemployment office. Well this week we could no longer get faxes to go to DHS or the licensing bureau. Another library in the area was having the same problem. She had a connection to the state and got a hold of their tech people. His suggestion was to check the speed of your fax and change it and maybe call the phone carrier. Our director contacted our phone company and they changed some setting at their end. Today we faxed to the unemployment office and it went through. WOO HOO So if you are still having problems you may want to contact your phone carrier and see if there is something that can be done on their end. So, we're taking the conversation to the next level, by taking a very hands-on turn in our content for this year's event. We know that strong research begins with a well-defined question and answers come from well-planned data collection and analysis. By focusing on the how rather than the why of effective research projects, our conference tracks will introduce you to a variety of research methodologies, approaches and ideas suited for tackling different kinds of research projects and asking different kinds of questions. Solar Eclipse glasses

I spoke to Anne Holland at the NASA table representing the Space Science Institute at ALA. She said she still has solar eclipse glasses available and if you wanted a quantity smaller than 1,000 she may be able to ship those to you now. You can email her directly with an order (100+ please) at aholland(a)spacescience.org<mailto:aholland@spacescience.org>. If she runs out of shipping materials, she may have to continue to send out 1,000, so consider partnering with a library in your cooperative to share! I got the impression there will be many of the public asking for these glasses come August and NASA will be directing folks to check with their local library. Greetings, everyone! Now that we're all back from ALA, many of us with large (back-breaking?) collections of Advanced Readers Copies, I'm curious how other libraries make use of those lovely freebies once they've been lugged back home. I'm having a hard time convincing my staff that they don't belong on our shelves but I confess that the issue is a little cloudy for me, as well. Do any of you catalog your ARCs or loan them in some way? Also, I'm very interested in the types of ARC-related programming, etc., others have done. Barrington Area Library - Executive Director Be a vital community catalyst and library futurist as the next Executive Director for the Barrington Area Library<http://www.barringtonarealibrary.org/>. The Library's mission focuses on four key areas: stimulating imagination; supporting information literacy; fostering multigenerational and creative lifelong learning; and creating young readers. A customer-centric and committed staff (65 FTE) successfully fulfills that mission in comfortable physical and virtual settings through the Library's outstanding digital collections and services, collaborative and vibrant community spaces, and stellar programs and activities for all ages. In 2013-2014, the Library transformed its public space through a complete redesign and revitalization. Customers now use and explore completely reimagined spaces, including: an interactive Youth Services department with a focus on active play and learning; a Business and Technology Center featuring a MakerLab, digital studio, public computers, technology collaboration spaces, and Business Cubicles; three improved and refurnished smart meeting rooms; and a greatly improved customer service experience. Serving 44,000 residents over a 72-mile square mile area, Barrington Area Library is geographically the largest library district in Illinois. In addition to the main library building, customer service is provided through remote delivery and return services throughout the district. Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees with a $6.7 million operating budget, the Library annually hosts 358,592 visitors and circulates 975,959 items. Located in the Village of Barrington (forty miles from downtown Chicago), the Barrington Area Library serves all or part of fourteen communities and unincorporated areas. Each community has its own special appeal which includes fine restaurants, the historic Catlow Theatre, nature preserves, and upscale lifestyle shopping centers. The Barrington area also focuses on family life and community engagement.
