Howdy! The University of Michigan School of Information's summer of statewide professional development is getting underway! Our first port of call is Monday, May 8, at Frankenmuth Wickson District Library in downtown Frankenmuth. Pick one workshop or both -- they're free! Invite your friendly troop leaders, school librarians, and fellow educators to join you. *MAKER IDEA SWAP, 10-11:30am* Looking for ways to freshen your makerspace programs and activities? Supplemental Sick Leave Bank for Employees

Hi All, We are currently in the process of finishing up a policy to create a supplemental sick leave bank for our staff. We already have a policy drafted but are working on a few final steps. If you offer a supplemental sick leave donation bank to your staff, would you be willing to share with me your: 1. Do you have request and donor forms that you could share with me? 2. How do you track this liability in your books? Do you just keep an Excel spreadsheet or do you track it in Quickbooks/your accounting software somehow? I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer on this topic. Teen Video Challenge announcement

Thank you, Cathy Lancaster Sent from my iPad FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 14, 2017: The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) announced the winners of the 2017 Teen Video Challenge. The Teen Video Challenge is a national competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program. Winning videos were selected at the state level to be recognized as an official CSLP Teen Video Challenge winner for 2017. This video competition ended in its seventh year of encouraging teens to get involved with promoting summer reading and public libraries with a focus on the CSLP 2017 slogan, “Build a Better World.” Each participating state selected one winning video to be named the official CSLP Teen Video Challenge state winner for 2017. Fourteen states and over seventy teens participated in the creation of these winning videos. The winners were announced the week of April 10, 2017 during the CSLP Annual Meeting held in Charleston, South Carolina. Official CSLP Teen Video Challenge winners were named from the following states: California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, South Carolina and Washington. To view this year’s winning videos, please visit CSLP’s website at www.cslpreads.org<http://www.cslpreads.org/>. The winning videos can be used by all teens and all public libraries to promote summer reading nationwide. The winning videos illustrate the diversity of our nation and of the teens that create them. Whether produced by an individual teen, groups of teens, a teen library club or a teen school group, all exhibit creativity and illustrate quality work on the part of the industrious teen film makers. The videos use a variety of references to communicate the “Build a Better World” idea. In addition to promoting reading and the “Build a Better World” slogan, it is clear from all these videos that teens value their public libraries. The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) is a consortium of states working together to provide a unified summer reading theme along with professional art and evidence-based materials so that member libraries can provide high-quality summer reading programs at the lowest possible cost and to play a significant role in literacy initiatives.

Library of Michigan LSTA Public Library Services Grant Program Announcement

The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce a new Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) summer quick grant program for public libraries. LSTA allows grant funds for public library services and has priorities for targeting library services to individuals of diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to individuals with disabilities, individuals with limited functional literacy or information skills and expanding services for learning and access to information. This program provides funding for public libraries to purchase materials and supplies that meet the selected program topics for a given year and are for an identified program or service the library will be providing. Funding is intended to supplement local topical services that improve information access and quality of service in their communities. The focus will be on small projects that improve community services, with a focus on the LSTA priorities listed above. The grant period will be from June to August annually, as funding allows. Funding will be from $500 to $2,000. Funding is by reimbursement. The application deadline is May 22, 2017. Eligible applicants are Michigan public libraries that are legally established and currently eligible for state aid.
