Use this MeL resource for excellent commentary and viewpoints on numerous social issues. It's perfect for social studies research and for inquiring minds at your libraries! Coming in November, an Opposing Viewpoints In Context extension will be available in the Chrome Web Store. When added to Chrome browsers, it will display results from Gale's popular database alongside Google search results. The Gale Chrome extension puts OVIC resources in the everyday workflow. Library users can view and retrieve high quality content from Opposing Viewpoints In Context that includes academic journals, reference content, and viewpoints on today's hottest social issues. Taking action for E-Rate

[Take Action For Libraries] Advocacy Alert: E-rate [Library Funding]At the end of September, the FCC launched a Public Notice asking for input about Category 2 (C2) funding. Specifically, they want to know whether libraries are using their allotted budgets and if it meets their needs. While we know there are many reasons why libraries do or do not request funding for C2, what we want to make crystal clear to the FCC is that having funds available is critical for libraries, ensuring they can maintain and upgrade their WiFi connectivity. How much are we talking about? In 2016, libraries requested more than $50 million for C2 through the E-rate program. The deadline to submit comments is October 23, 2017 and we're calling on you to tell the FCC libraries need secure funding for E-rate. Tell the FCC how much your patrons depend on the library to connect. How to submit a comment: * Format your response as a PDF document. The Bower-Averbach Collection held at the Martha W. Griffiths Michigan Rare Book Room is just such a collection, where its value en masse far outweighs one single volume or digital facsimile. The information comes not just from the type on the pages but from the owners, writers, illustrators, and the physical nature of the book itself. The current exhibit, Angling and Conservation in Michigan, the Inheritance from the English Leisure Society, considers the history and origins of water conservation in Michigan and the tradition of fly fishing upon which it is based. The exhibit highlights just some of the material collected by Seymour Bower and J.E. Averbach. Seymour Bower (1855 - 1924), for 25 years the superintendent of fisheries in Michigan, was one of the nation's foremost authorities on fisheries. This collection includes works of scientific as well as antiquarian interest, and many particularly concern Michigan and the Great Lakes area. J.E. Averbach assembled an equally impressive array of titles in the field. The exhibit will be on display from October 14th, 2017 until January 5th 2018. Contributing authors include: a 14th century nun, English royalty, an American President and a judge in the Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti trial. The Martha W.
