Public libraries that serve small and/or rural communities are invited to apply for a travel stipend to attend a one-day dialogue and deliberation pre-conference workshop at the 2018 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans. Attending the pre-conference is free, though space will be limited to 50 participants. Twenty-five participants from public libraries serving small and/or rural communities will be selected to receive an $800 stipend to help cover travel costs for one library employee. "Libraries Transforming Communities: Conversation Café Workshop for Public Libraries Serving Small, Mid-Sized and/or Rural Communities" will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to provide quality service to the staff and the public and the desire to work in a collaborative, team environment. POSITION TITLE: Youth Services Page DEPARTMENT: Youth Services, reporting to Assistant Department Head RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct public service: • provides positive, pleasant professional services to staff and public • directs patrons to appropriate staff for assistance • retrieves materials for patrons and staff Indirect public service: • sorts and shelves materials, • reads shelves to ensure accurate order so that materials can be found by patrons • follows direction of supervisor • assists department staff before and after programs when needed REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: • Able to lift, bend, and stoop to shelve materials • Able to push or pull carts weighing at least 20 pounds • Desire to serve the public in a positive manner • able to visually review materials and discern voice and audible tones Desirable: • Public library work experience • Computer/keyboard experience HOURS: Part-time, approximately 10 weekly, including some evenings and weekends. There are a few guidelines that help improve the experience for everyone: 1. Please keep in mind when composing your messages that attachments are removed from posts for digest subscribers and in the archives. For maximum reach, embed the text you wish readers to see in the body of your message. If an attachment is especially important for its images, formatting or other reasons, upload it to your website and then link to it in your message to Michlib-l. 2. Do not post replies that are meant for one person to the entire list. You can accomplish this by using the "Reply" feature and not "Reply All." 3. If you ask for group input on a topic, offer to collect the responses and then re-post them to the list so everyone can benefit. Be sure to embed those responses in the body of your message. And, of course, a little patience goes a long way. We've all accidentally posted something to a list that was only meant for one person so gentleness with each other is helpful as well. RLC Awards - wouldn't it be nice to see your favorite librarian on stage?

We all enjoy the feeling of being recognized by our peers for a job well done. This is your opportunity to take a few hours between now and January 12th to put together a nomination packet for one of four awards being given at RLC 2018 in Traverse City. Please consider who you know that meets the quality of excellence in the profession. Do you know someone at a small or rural library who is a leader in our profession? Do you have a Trustee or Friend who goes above and beyond the call of duty to promote and advance your library? Do you know a small or rural library that truly excels? We want to hear from you! It's time again to nominate libraries, staff, trustees, and friends of small and rural libraries for a Loleta Fyan Conference Award. Self-nominations are accepted for the Mendel award that goes to a library and it includes a cash prize! The conference will be held at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme outside Traverse City April 30-May 2, 2018. Nominations are due by Friday, January 12, 2018 to norriss2(a)michigan.gov or by post to Sonya Schryer Norris, Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI 48909. There will be four awards in 2018. The categories are: * Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award * Trustee/Friend Award * Patron Service Award (includes children's services) * The June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service (this award goes to a small/rural library) Please note that library cooperative staff and conference planning committee chairs are not eligible for conference awards. To qualify for the award the library must serve a population of 25,000 or less. Branch locations of larger libraries do not qualify for nomination. Nominations may come from a library director or staff, another library, a library user, a community business or organization, a library cooperative or a library may self-nominate for the June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service.
