Hi Everyone ~ On Thursday evening we had a fun program with author William (Bill) Rapai. He presented in other libraries after the publication of his second book, Lake invaders : invasive species and the battle for the future of the Great Lakes. Our program focused on his recently published book on Michigan craft beer, Brewed in Michigan : the new golden age of brewing in the great beer state. Our Director received permission from the Board for us to sample craft beers. There were five (Well four, plus Budweiser as a baseline) beers sampled and discussed. We had 47 people in attendance and they seemed to really enjoy the program. Bill is a great presenter. He was also a pleasure to work with. We gave him a $100.00 honorarium, but he might do the program for less, or perhaps even just for the opportunity to sell his beautiful book. He lives in Bloomfield Hills so nearby libraries will probably be the best, but he did invite me to tell all the librarians in the state about the program! Thanks! RLC Awards - do you have a library or a person in mind?

We all enjoy the feeling of being recognized by our peers for a job well done. This is your opportunity to take a few hours between now and January 12th to put together a nomination packet for one of four awards being given at RLC 2018 in Traverse City. Please consider who you know that meets the quality of excellence in the profession. Do you know someone at a small or rural library who is a leader in our profession? Do you have a Trustee or Friend who goes above and beyond the call of duty to promote and advance your library? Do you know a small or rural library that truly excels? We want to hear from you! It's time again to nominate libraries, staff, trustees, and friends of small and rural libraries for a Loleta Fyan Conference Award. Self-nominations are accepted for the Mendel award that goes to a library and it includes a cash prize! The conference will be held at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme outside Traverse City April 30-May 2, 2018. Nominations are due by Friday, January 12, 2018 to norriss2(a)michigan.gov or by post to Sonya Schryer Norris, Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI 48909. There will be four awards in 2018. The categories are: * Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award * Trustee/Friend Award * Patron Service Award (includes children's services) * The June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service (this award goes to a small/rural library) Please note that library cooperative staff and conference planning committee chairs are not eligible for conference awards. To qualify for the award the library must serve a population of 25,000 or less. Branch locations of larger libraries do not qualify for nomination. Nominations may come from a library director or staff, another library, a library user, a community business or organization, a library cooperative or a library may self-nominate for the June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service. Please Help Encourage Parent Feedback on the School Transparency Dashboard Survey

Please help get this message from the Michigan Department of Education out to parents: Parents and other caregivers of children from preschool through grade 12 are invited to provide feedback on Michigan's new, online "transparency dashboard<http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/SBE_Policy_Statement_on_Transparency_…>" designed to show the performance of every public school in Michigan, including public school academies. The dashboard is currently under development by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). It is expected to be made available to the public by early 2018. The new dashboard will report on more than 20 different factors-or measures-that parents and other stakeholders have said are important to them when evaluating the quality of a school. The survey allows participants to view components of the new dashboard, then answer questions about the way information is presented, the usefulness of certain features, and viewers' unique interests.
