They will also address the question "When is it time for the two organizations to merge?" and share solutions for engaging in a merger process that minimizes pain and maximizes potential. Michigan Rails 2016: Authors, Books, Maps, and More and the Library of Michigan

Please join us for a full day of Michigan railroading sessions October 8th at the Library of Michigan, 9:00 - 4:30 Topics to be covered include: passenger trains, research sources, Upper Peninsula railroads, south east railroad lines, preservation efforts, rail photography, boat trains and the Pere Marquette 1225 engine. Rare Michigan railroad material will be on display along with a railroad cookbook browsing collection in the Martha W. Griffiths Michigan Rare Book Room. As a special gift, event goers will take home a memento from the outstanding staff from the Michigan State University Special Collection Library. A reproduction from the Cookery & Food Collection in the Michigan State University Libraries, a 1941 menu from the Super Chief, a line of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Company. Fletcher Public Library <https://www.alpenalibrary.org/> *Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m.* *//*A preview screening of///Hamilton’s America, /the documentary film that brings history to vivid life through the lens of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pop culture Broadway phenomenon /Hamilton/ – winner of 11 Tony Awards® and the Pulitzer Prize — will be held at Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library <https://www.alpenalibrary.org/>on Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m. David Nicholas, CMU Public Radio producer and host of “Mosaic,” will co-host the event on Sunday and follow up on Monday with a live broadcast from 9 a.m. to noon from the Library. The public is encouraged to attend both events.Highlights of the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival will also be shared. The story of Alexander Hamilton is most remembered for its dramatic conclusion, which saw Hamilton killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr. But the full story of this political genius – a poor immigrant who built himself up from nothing to become one of the nation’s most vital architects – has largely been forgotten by history…until now. Today, Hamilton’s fan club is vocal and growing, thanks, in no small measure, to Tony®, Grammy®, and Emmy®-winning composer and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical. With its young cast claiming America’s history as its own, /Hamilton /is redefining how audiences learn about history. The programshows just how timeless the hot-button issues of today’s America are: immigration, States’ rights, debt, income inequality, and race relations. These were the same fights that defined Hamilton’s time, and they are the driving force of Miranda’s historic work. The film endeavors to brush the dust off American history, much as the musical does, and provide a unique new way for us to view our national heritage and current political landscape. Hi everyone, Here's a description of one of our upcoming library programs (flyer attached): Want to write about your life? If so, consider attending the free “Memoir Writing Workshop” at Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, in Room 30 on Wednesday, September 28, 6-8 p.m. R.J. Fox—a Dearborn native, graduate of Edsel Ford High School and University of Michigan-Dearborn, and author of *Love & Vodka: My Surreal Adventures in the Ukraine*—will offer advice on how to write your own memoir. “There is nothing in life that can't be turned into a story,” says Fox. “You don't have to be famous to write memoir. You don't even need to have a profound experience to write about. Sometimes, the most mundane memories from our life can make for the most interesting, relatable experiences—if written in an entertaining and thought-provoking way.” He also points out: “In many ways, memoir writing is similar to movies based on real-life people. There is usually a mutual understanding that not all of it can be 100% exactly the way it happened. You are not a news reporter. Dear Library Friends, As we come to the end of another very busy year and you take stock of your many accomplishments, please don't forget to apply for FOML's *Outstanding Michigan Friends of the Library Award*. Did your Friends of the Library group carry out an outstanding project or a number of successful activities in your community during 2016 that had a significant impact on your library’s services to the community? Tell us about it! The award will be given to two different Michigan Friends groups. It could be for a specific project you carried out in 2016 or based on the full scope of the group’s activities during 2016. One award will go to a library that serves a population of under 12,000 people and one to a library that serves a population of 12,000 or more. Applications will be judged by the FOML Grants Committee on the following criteria: 1. *Planning:* Involvement of the Friends, library, and community in the use of resources, an innovative and appropriate activity, and measurable outcomes (e.g., attendance at event, increase in patron use of the library, etc.). 2. *Implementation:* Public relations, broad membership involvement, and use of resources. 3. *Evaluation:* Assessment of activity or program with measurable results. 4. *Innovation:* New idea(s) for program or activity, creative involvement of community and specific citizens, and creative use of public relations. 5. *Community Involvement*: Evidence of community involvement in planning and implementation. The winning Friends group will receive $400 and a plaque, along with an invitation for 2 of your members to attend the FOML Annual Membership Meeting in 2017 to receive the award. E-Rate Training Registration Now Posted

Michigan 2016 Fall E-Rate Training Dates Announced! Training will be held on October 31 at Kent ISD, November 1 at Winding Brook in Shepherd (ITV option), and November 2 at Genesee ISD. The day will be broken into two parts: 8:30-11:30 E-Rate Overview for beginners and noon-4:00 E-Rate Update. We are happy to announce that Becky Rains, E-Rate Central Consultant, will be leading the training. Becky has been actively involved with the E-rate program application process since 2001. She served as the Arkansas State E-rate Coordinator for 14 years before retiring and joining E-Rate Central. Becky will also be providing PIA support for the state.
