Letters About Literature 2017

The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2017 Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program. We are the Michigan host for this national program from the Library of Congress. It is a reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. The 2017 letters will be due in two waves. Level III entries (grades 9-12) have a deadline of December 2, 2016, and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 9, 2017. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2017. Baker & Taylor price changes

Hi! Been pondering this question and wondered if everyone else has had the same response from Baker & Taylor in response to their price changes between the time of ordering and the time of receiving: For example, often, when ordering something through their TS360 site - they list the price, but when it actually comes - the price is higher. Most times it is not that significant, but it adds up. Today I had two that were actually each $5 higher than their advertised price. When I asked a few months ago, I was told that the prices that I see listed in their online catalog were not set in stone - and that they reserve the right to raise the price. The only way around this is to do this: Each time you want to order books, build your cart, but, instead of ordering right then and there, ask for a quote to be sent to you. This quote is good for 30 days and the prices listed in the quote will be honored. This just seems like a ploy to get you to NOT ask for a quote - because who has time to wait for that? And, in this day and age, don't you think they could get their prices changed on their website quickly. Or, do they wait until an order is placed - then go find the current price? Regardless, I don't think this is a good business practice. I make ordering decisions based on the prices that I see at that time - and it seems like false advertising to change it. Maybe it is in their fine print - but the website doesn't clearly state that the price is subject to change. Has anyone successfully asked for refunds? Thanks! FOIA Requests

Hi, Has anyone gotten what I call a nuisance FOIA request? A local resident sent a letter wanting our statistics for 5 years, including number of people using the library, number of cards issued, computer usage, budget and income/expense statements, and my salary. We put links to the Annual State Aid Reports on our website and I referred her to those, as allowed by FOIA. She now wants everything by the month. I explained I would have to charge her to do the work to compile those monthly numbers, and she said she doesn't care. Based on other things she and her little band who don't think Elk Rapids needs a library are doing I'm sure this is just to make things difficult. The grant program is designed to provide Michigan libraries with the opportunity to develop innovative programs or services that have the potential to develop into sustainable regional or statewide programs, and include strong partnerships between libraries, and/or community groups or agencies. Applicants may propose a library program or service in any content area appropriate for library services, such as: * To develop an innovative service or program to meet a newly identified community need; * To meet the increased community demand for a service or resource; * To improve or develop new services to target populations, such as people from diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; and individuals with limited functional literacy, limited English proficiency or limited information literacy skills. The grant program is competitive. The grant period will be from one to three years and funding will be for $50,000 to $225,000 per year up to a possible total of $500,000 over three years. Applications will be reviewed by the Library of Michigan staff and the LSTA Advisory Council as peer reviewers. No more than ONE to THREE grants will be approved. Eligible applicants include Michigan public, academic, school and special libraries as well as non-profit statewide organizations that serve Michigan libraries.
