Member Services Associate Job Description: The Allegan District Library is looking for an outgoing, self-motivated and detail oriented individual to become part of our dynamic team. The successful candidate will provide front line customer service at our main service desk. Essential job duties include: Ensuring an exemplary library experience by greeting, assisting, instructing and promoting library services to members in a positive and pleasant manner. Using the library’s automated circulation system to circulate materials to library members including checking materials in and out, processing holds, and registering borrowers, collecting fines and fees and processing lost/paid items per set procedures. Answering telephone inquiries and providing general member assistance. Performing essential daily operations including opening and closing of circulation desk and building, counting money, emptying the book drop and shelving library materials when needed. Job Requirements: A high school diploma and two years of customer service related work experience. Full/Part Time & Hours: Part Time 18 hours per week includes some nights and weekends. I've been given a copy of the film "India Awakes" (released this past August by Free to Choose Media out of Chicago) to add to our collection and am NOT a cataloguer. I cannot find a marc record I can 'borrow' for this item; I can do the cataloging but some help from a knowledgeable cataloguer on what Dewey to use would be most appreciated. Letters about Literature judges wanted for 2016!

The Library of Michigan is looking for judges for the Letters about Literature program. Librarians and teachers familiar with English language arts education, young adult literature, and literary programming for grades 4-12 are welcome. Judging includes reading approximately 50 letters sometime in February or March and one meeting to discuss which letters should be the winner and finalists. Meeting attendance in person is encouraged, but conference call attendance is fine. If you are interested, please contact me and let me know if you are interested in Level I (grades 4-6), Level II (grades 7-8), or Level III (grades 9-12). Do any libraries check out board games to patrons or do you have them available in the library for patrons to play? Any ideas of what to do with these would be nice! Did you see the findings in the latest Pew Report, Libraries at the Crossroads? http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/09/15/libraries-at-the-crossroads/ One of the statistics provided in the report released this month was that 85% of the public wants libraries to coordinate more closely with local schools in providing resources to kids. Do you have a relationship with your local school? Are the teachers there familiar with the resources students can find in your library? Do you offer to speak to groups of teachers at in-service meetings to tell them about opportunities the public library has available to augment student learning? Do you have some great ideas about getting to know the educators and administrators in your community? If so, please share them here so your colleagues can benefit from your experience. If you are looking for information about how to create these connections the upcoming, November 11 Mahoney Workshop on Collaboration and Student Achievement would be a great place to start. The day-long pre-conference event will be held in Bay City and includes opportunities to learn from a variety of presenters from both here and around the country.
