Hi Again-I've had couple of follow-up questions as to what might be available in MeL for computer skills/workforce development skills since the Computer Skills Center will no longer be part of LearningExpress Library in MeL starting October 1, 2015. This is basically what we've got going in these 2 areas; what you will see are freely available websites chosen by our MeL selector(s): So, what we have available is in MeL's Job's Gateway, http://mel.org/jobs and in particular on the "Tutorials" page, http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1006 within the Jobs Gateway--minus the Computer Skills Center which you currently see there as we are not yet to 10/1. There are other freely available websites on the "Workforce Development" page, http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1011 Also, Pure Michigan Talent Connect, http://mitalent.org has much of what JCA has and it's available to all Michigan residents at no cost. Rural Libraries Conference 2016 Awards Nomination

Greetings Michigan Library Community, Do you know someone at a small or rural library who is a leader in our profession? How about someone who goes the extra mile when working with children and teens? Do you have Trustee or Friend who goes above and beyond the call of duty to promote and advance your library? Do you know a small or rural library that truly excels (and that library could be you!) We want to hear from you! It's time again to nominate libraries, directors, librarians, employees, trustees, and friends of rural libraries for a Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference Awards. The conference will be held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island May 4-6, 2016. Nominations are due by Friday, January 8, 2016. There will be four awards in 2016 (the same number as 2014). The categories are: * Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award * Trustee/Friend Award * Outstanding Youth/Children Award * The June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service (this award goes to a small/rural library) Please note that Library Cooperative staff and conference planning committee chairs are not eligible for conference awards. To qualify for the award the library must serve a population of 25,000 or less. Branch locations of larger libraries do not qualify for nomination. The nomination may come from another library, a library user, a community business or organization, a library cooperative or a library may self-nominate for the June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service. At this point I'll ask if there is anyone else willing to take a few moments to share? What is the name of the program or software you use? - is it efficient? - is it user-friendly? - Are you happy with it? What were the up-front costs for the program/software? - were there any long term costs to consider? Has your library seen an increase in program attendance with the use of the opt-in email list? - or other indications that the email list is working? Conservation and Collections Care Camp - Nov. 5

Call for Participants & Presenters: The next Conservation and Collections Care Camp is set for November 5, 2015. It will be held in Livonia at the National Headquarters for Document Freeze Drying (DFD) /Document Restoration Services. The agenda will consist of (informal) presentations / discussions with our peers about pressing or puzzling issues, followed by a tour of the facility (3 buildings!) which specializes in recovering documents, electronic files, and artwork that has been damaged in a disaster. The tour will be conducted by Bill Gulley, Archives Specialist. Fittingly, our theme for this camp will be "Preparation." ** Tentative time will be 10:00- 3:00. There is no cost for the camp, but lunch will be on your own. Registration Required. In you have attended a C&C Camp before, you know that it is conducted in an informal environment designed for us share conservation-related accomplishments, ask colleagues about their experiences, and to give & get advice. The focus is primarily, though not exclusively, about analog materials: paper, photographs, film, art, etc. Please plan to attend to share your experiences and questions AND to learn exactly how those wet & moldy documents get brought back to life. Participants must be able to negotiate stairs.
