Dear Collective Mind, We are looking at Braille labelers and tape to put on our audio book collection for our visually challenged patrons. library director contract vs. no contract

Good afternoon: My library board chair recently asked me why I do not have a contract with the library. Dawn and I then had a conversation about the benefits of a contract vs. no contract. I thought I would ask my fellow librarians their thoughts on the matter. What do you feel the benefits are to having a contract over not having one? MI Tax Forms @ Libraries

Good News from MI Treasury: Treasury’s distribution vendor is preparing to begin distribution of tax materials to libraries at the end of this week and will continue through next week. Libraries should have their materials by Feb. 3, if not before. Libraries can contact Heather Lund at LundH1(a)michigan.gov if they don’t receive their materials or if they find they need additional tax materials. Hello all, Some of the highest in-demand professions today are in the health care field. As enrollments increase and students of all ages pursue certifications as well as degrees, the need for reliable and readily accessible resources and learning tools increases. BedTime Math

Thanks to everyone who responded re: my question about BedTime Math. I've compiled the results below. BedTime Math no longer allows the program to be run during the summer months since much of the program is cumulative and there were a lot of absences with vacations, etc. We are going to begin hosting ours in the fall. I have the materials and I am impressed with what I see. I don't know how it will go over mainly because of the 8 week requirement. I expect kids to miss one or two over the 8 week period due to vacations. Because of the possible absence of kids each week it seems good that each lesson is independent of the others. I did notice that the Crazy 8 program is now asking for the program to be scheduled during the school year and NOT over the summer. I applied last year so they sent me the materials but I don't know if they will still allow a summer program. She also remembers a scene with a group of women shopping for fabric to make a dress (maybe a wedding dress) and the women make fun of the person making the dress - she remembers them calling her chicken legs. She also said the musical was really old, but she also said another movie from 2006 was really old (she's 12) so take that part with a grain of salt. Does anyone know this musical? Thanks! Tracy

Sponsored by DALINC (Dubuque Area Library Information Consortium) Call for Proposals If you're looking for an opportunity to share what you've digitized in your collection or how you've accomplished it, please share your knowledge with others! The Small Archival Projects Conference Committee is seeking proposals for 50 minute presentations (40-45 minutes for the presentation with 5-10 minutes for questions). The presentations can be about any aspect of small archival projects including: * Equipment selection * Project management - budget, workflow, etc. * Project selection - how do you decide what to digitize? * Best practices * Freeware, software choices, hosting options, etc. * Grants * Publicizing collections once they have been digitized * People who have worked on a project and would be willing to tell us what went well, what they'd do differently, etc. * Small, practical, limited projects Information about the conference including specific information for presenters is available at: www.dalinc.org/smallarchival/present.html.
