The Clinton-Macomb Public Library is looking to hire multiple new substitute librarians to work at any of our locations (Main Library: Adult Nonfiction, Children's Services, Popular Materials; North Branch Reference, South Branch Reference). This is also a great opportunity for students who are close to completion of their MSI degree and want an opportunity to gain field experience in a thriving public library. Under the Radar Michigan Book and DVD Bulk Purchase Opportunity and New MAP Partnership, Too!

All, I am pleased to announce that TLN has entered into a new partnership with Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman of the Emmy Award winning PBS show Under The Radar Michigan and Scribe Publishing Company http://utrmichigan.com/ They probably need no introduction to the Michigan library community, but here is what the director of one TLN library had to say about UTR: "We hosted the Under the Radar guys and it was fabulous. Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman from UTR accomplished something that doesn't happen often: they made us laugh over and over * and * reminded us how great Michiganders are. UTR isn't about "the best of the best" it's about the unique towns, festivals and travel opportunities there are in our state. It really boils down to the people behind these destinations. The coolest thing is that Tom and Jim are a Michigan success story themselves. They both found themselves out of work during the recession. They knew each other as fellow media professionals, so they put their heads together and started pitching ideas to PBS. Their book sales were brisk (we're hoping there can be a group discounted buy, maybe, for public libraries in Michigan?). At least four of our guests (full-house) said it was the best program they'd ever attended! Don't you want to have them, too?" As part of our partnership Tom and Jim are offering Michigan libraries a discounted purchase opportunity for their book Under the Radar: Michigan http://scribe-publishing-company.myshopify.com/products/utr as well as the four dvd set of their show. Michigan libraries can purchase the book for just $16.00. List price is $24.95. Michigan libraries can purchase the complete four dvd set of the show for just $90.00. List price is $120.00. Please email your order(s) for the book and/or dvd set to me by no later than Friday, February 13. In order to facilitate the distribution process here, we ask that non-TLN libraries also include their RIDES delivery number with their order. The other aspect of this new partnership concerns promotion by UTR of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program. Both Tom and Jim are media professionals. Their UTR Facebook https://www.facebook.com/UTRMichigan page has in excess of 45,000 likes. Their willingness to include MAP in their social media presence will be a huge boost to the promotional aspect of the program. To wit, here is what UTR has agreed to do, promotion-wise, with and for the MAP program: ** Support MAP communication efforts via their Social Media world ** Include a minimum of 1 post per month profiling events, press, news, etc that are part of MAP communication efforts ** Provide MAP with an ad presence for one year on the utrmichigan.com (Size: 90x120) ** UTR will include MAP events or news in its monthly newsletter, once per quarter. The Library of Michigan's Beginning Workshop is a 3-day event geared for library staff members that have not had the opportunity for formal library coursework. Its aim is to introduce library staff to a variety of topics and offer them practical skills that they can use working in a Michigan public library. Anyone new to the profession or just hired at a library, no matter what their academic credentials, is welcome to attend the event. For those seeking an initial Level 3 or Level 4 certificate from the Library of Michigan attendance at the entire Beginning Workshop is obligatory. Michigan Activity Pass Breaking News: MAP + Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym=Big Outdoor and Indoor Fun For Michigan Public Library Patrons!

All, When your library patrons think of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) http://michiganactivitypass.info program, what comes to mind? Spending a day at one of the nation's premier art museums http://www.dia.org/ perhaps. Or taking in a show at http://www.stagecrafters.org/ Or going for a ride (when there isn't snow covering the tracks, as is the case today) on http://www.southernmichiganrailroad.com/ There are 112 cultural partners in the MAP program, located in every corner of the state from Monroe to Mackinaw City to Marquette (and beyond). Many of our current venues involve indoor activities. What about outdoor activities? Year round outdoor activities? And not just between Memorial Day and Labor Day! Well, soon we will have your library patrons covered there, too! Today I am proud, pleased, and yes, excited even, to announce that, effective May 24, 2015, thanks to our new partnership with Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Recreation and Park Association, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, as well as with our continuing partners Institute of Museum and Library Services, Library of Michigan, and Plymouth Rocket, the Michigan Activity Pass program administered by The Library Network (TLN) will expand to include all state parks and state recreation areas that in previous years have been included in the DNR administered and BCBSM and MRPA sponsored Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym program. Yes, beginning May 24, 2015 your library patrons will be able to access online via the MAP software, passes to state parks and recreation areas from http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/details.aspx?id=497&type=SPRK to http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?id=426&type=SPRK and all points in between. This will effectively double the number of participating venues in the MAP program! And the media contacts and promotional activities that our new partners can bring to the table will result in publicity for the newly expanded MAP program the likes of which we've never been able to achieve before. On December 28, 2014 we reported that the number of MAP passes circulated in the first seven months of current MAP Year 2, had already exceeded the total number of MAP passes circulated in the full 12 months of MAP Year 1. The new MAP will launch May 24, 2015. The inclusion of state parks and recreation areas, combined with the publicity and promotional activities by our new partners, means that the sky is the limit for MAP Year 3. We will share additional details regarding this expansion of MAP to include the Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym program, in the upcoming weeks and months. In the meantime, on account this is the biggest thing to happen regarding statewide MAP since, well, statewide MAP, please feel free to start spreading the word: Beginning May 24, 2015, MAP + Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym=Big Outdoor and Indoor Fun for Michigan Public Library Patrons! Cleaning books from a smoke- and soot-damaged home

I'm hoping that someone out there has some advice we can pass along to a patron whose home caught fire recently. She has many books that were not damaged in the fire but do smell strongly of smoke, and the insurance company recommended that she have them cleaned using an ozone process. (I believe this is similar to how professional detailers remove smoke smells from cars.) The patron is looking to donate the books after they've been cleaned but wants to make sure that this process isn't dangerous for those who would receive the books.
