Author Presentation Tonight on Zoom ~ "Wright Brothers, Wrong Story" with William Hazelgrove
by Amy Abele 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

*Join us Tuesday, February 1 at 6:00pm EST to hear National Bestselling author, William Hazelgrove, discuss his book, "Wright Brothers, Wrong Story."* Mr. Hazelgrove will reveal how each brother had a distinctive role in creating the first successful airplane and makes a convincing case that it was actually Wilbur Wright who designed it, not Orville. "Wright Brothers, Wrong Story" is richly researched and well-told. The tale of this landmark achievement is illustrated with rare historical photos and captures the excitement of the times at the start of the “American Century". Whitmer Announces 250,000 Free COVID-19 Tests for Michiganders LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) today announced a partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation to ship 250,000 free tests to 50,000 households to help get COVID-19 at-home tests into the hands of vulnerable Michiganders. “Testing is critical to helping Michiganders protect themselves and their loved ones as we face the Omicron variant of COVID-19,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “I am grateful to the Rockefeller Foundation and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for teaming up to deliver 250,000 tests to families in counties across the state. Earlier this month, we surged 300,000 tests to schools and other group settings too. Together, we can keep ourselves safe by testing, getting vaccinated and boosted, and wearing a mask in high-transmission areas.” Households in eligible ZIP codes in Berrien, Genesee, Kent, Macomb, Muskegon, Oakland, Saginaw and Wayne counties, and the City of Detroit are eligible to order one test kit per household from the Project Act website<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Each kit contains five tests and should arrive in Amazon packaging within one to two weeks of ordering. Michigan has 250,000 tests, which will be made available to 50,000 households in this first phase of the program, with additional test availability anticipated in the future. Individuals seeking to order tests will input their ZIP code to see if they live in a qualifying area. Individuals without Internet access can contact the COVID-19 hotline at 888-535-6136, or contact 211 for assistance ordering tests. "Testing is an important tool to limit the spread of the virus and at-home tests allow individuals to very quickly determine if they are positive for the virus and take actions to isolate and seek treatment if needed. I urge Michiganders to order their tests today in addition to getting the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine and their booster dose when eligible, as the vaccine is our best defense against the virus,” said Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel. “We are grateful for this partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation that will put more tests into the hands of Michiganders most in need as we continue battling COVID-19.” The public-private public partnership program brings together five other state health departments in Arkansas, Illinois, Maine, New Mexico and Ohio along with test manufacturer iHealth, health technology company CareEvolution, and logistics provider and distribution leader Amazon. This program is in addition to free at-home tests available through the federal government partnership with the United States Postal Service.<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> Michiganders also have numerous options for accessing COVID-19 testing such as MDHHS supported community popup testing sites<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>, which include testing at welcome centers and airports in addition to 22 neighborhood testing sites across the state. 2022 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour Reminder and Promotional Material
by Oster, Adam (MDE) 31 Jan '22

31 Jan '22

Just a reminder that Michigan Libraries may apply to participate in the 2022 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour. The application form<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdwyAZTCRp-_Zv5zwmVHpw4bLpQD8cPP8Y…> is on the Michigan Notable Books website under the "Information for Libraries" section: www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks<http://www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks>. Michigan libraries have until Monday, February 14, 2022 to submit their application. Please note: * Not all Michigan Notable Book authors are available to participate in the tour. The ones participating in the tour are listed on the application. We will do our best to assign one of your preferred choices for your library, though we cannot make any guarantees. Libraries may be assigned any of the participating authors based on availability. * 50 libraries will be selected to participate in the tour. We have several downloadable/printable graphics that libraries can use for promoting the Michigan Notable Books program: https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9327,7-381-88854_90002-520507-…. We have a few more that should be uploaded soon so keep checking on the page periodically. Additionally, we are now highlighting each individual MNB title on the Library of Michigan's social media accounts on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Feel free to share/retweet these posts on your own library accounts. A good strategy is to also share the post with the book's permanent record link from your catalog record so your patrons can put the item on hold. A special shout-out goes to Newaygo Area District Library<https://newaygolibrary.org/> for doing that with today's "Ancestor Approved" post! https://www.facebook.com/newaygolibrary/posts/10159668583532597 If you have any questions about the MNB program, 2022 tour or the application, feel free to email myself at OsterA(a)Michigan.gov<mailto:OsterA@Michigan.gov> or my colleague Mindy Babarskis at BabarskisM(a)Michigan.gov<mailto:BabarskisM@Michigan.gov>. Funding for the 2022 Michigan Notable Books program was made possible in part by Michigan Humanities<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/>, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Over the years we have had some really fun themes and slogans. From "Libraries Rock" to "Catch the Reading Bug", CSLP slogans can serve as an excellent jumping off point to create a wonderful program for your community. However, have you ever wondered where CSLP themes and slogans come from? [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/0b99c2dd-918c-8b…] Like everything at CSLP, the themes and slogans are developed by library volunteers from across the country, usually a few years in advance. For a list of upcoming themes and slogans visit: https://www.cslpreads.org/themes-and-slogans/<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…> With the support of the Themes and Slogan committee, the first step happens early in the year, when CSLP State Representatives (often the Youth Consultant at your State Library) gather your suggestions, and submit them to the committee. The Themes and Slogan committee then organizes the submissions, and eliminates duplicates. With the the theme ideas, this is usually all that needs to be done. With the slogan ideas though, more work needs to happen. To help ensure that the slogans have wide appeal, "listening sessions" take place in the spring. These sessions follow a "town hall" structure, and are an opportunity for all library staff to weigh in on their favorite suggestions, and to help wordsmith the final results. Keep any eye out for session dates and times from your State Representative, or in upcoming newsletters. The committee then incorporates the feedback from the listening sessions into the "final" list of slogans. This list is then translated into Spanish by translation professionals, and the translations are reviewed by committee volunteers. After translation, the list is submitted to a law firm to ensure that the potential slogans do not infringe on any existing trademarks. The list of translated and vetted themes and slogans are then voted on by CSLP State Representative at their Annual Meeting in the fall! Fun fact: Slogan that are not chosen often end up as chapter headings in the programming manual! Need a quick worksheet? This simple worksheet was created in Word with just a few art elements, and a text box. Remember, all member libraries can created any "paper item" with CSLP slogans and artwork without needing any additional permission!
