Looking for an in-service presenter
by Kricket Hoekstra 08 Aug '22

08 Aug '22

Hello Libraryland, We are looking for a presenter for a staff training/in-service. Specifically a presenter who can talk about ways for library staff to handle difficult patron situations (i.e. patrons harassing staff, etc.). Do you know of any presenters that might fit this description? Or know of any organizations that might be a good resource to reach out to? We are aware of Ryan Dowd and are looking for what other options are out there. There is flexibility for virtual and/or in-person presenters. Please reply off-list. I will compile responses and share them with anyone interested. Thanks! Kricket Hoekstra she/her Head of Adult Services Ferndale Area District Library 248-546-2504 Ext. 696

Got a thorny issue our students might be able to help with this year?
by Kristin Fontichiaro 08 Aug '22

08 Aug '22

Dear Colleagues: It's been a doozy of a few years for public libraries, and I bet you have had a project simmering on the back burner while you worked to address issues that became unexpectedly urgent over the last few years. Meanwhile, we need real-world projects for our students to work on -- perhaps we can help you get closer to your goal! On behalf of our school's Engaged Learning Office, I am writing to share an opportunity for your organization to have University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) work on a project for your organization. ****TL;DR -- Don't hesitate to reach out to our office (details below) if you think our students might be able to help -- it's always worth asking! **** Submit your project idea <http://umsi.info/clientregister>, and the UMSI Engaged Learning Office will assist you in developing and scoping a full project proposal for a team of students to work on in the 2022-2023 academic year. The ideal deadline to submit is August 9, though project ideas will be accepted after that date. Students can enhance the work for your organization by working on projects in the following ways: <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2ZEtcX420E6f9ukT02gmHYL49EP3579SVC…> <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2ZEtcX420E6f9ukT02gmHYL49EP3579SVC…> - <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2ZEtcX420E6f9ukT02gmHYL49EP3579SVC…>SI 547: Engaging with Communities <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2ZEtcX420E6f9ukT02gmHYL49EP3579SVC…>: Students will *research and create a community profile based on an information need stated by your organization.* Let our students research your community’s Census, demographic, consumer, and economic data, conduct some interviews, and deliver results to you. We are specifically looking for cities, libraries, or non-profits in communities under 25,000 people. The students must be able to do research based on a community with a defined geographic area (defined by zip codes, census data, etc). We have had *many *public library clients for this in the past, and we've been able to ask questions of your community that might be awkward for you to ask! - - SI 633: Assessment in Cultural Institutions <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2xrpNtUBgLZSt0XAx_-yvVG_q8wXnBfBwc…>: Students will work on an assessment project for a service, tool, product, or collection for a cultural institution. Students can analyze data already collected via a survey or can create an assessment tool to deploy. Students can also interview patrons to collect data. Students will then assess the data to provide recommendations. - SI 501: Contextual Inquiry and Consulting Foundations <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2tQNri9YPSfRj9OXn8u49_Bab_d52Od3Zt…>: Students offer recommendations for a process or workflow that needs improvement or repair by conducting 6-10 interviews with those involved in the process, and performing qualitative analysis. - Civic Tech for Libraries: Students work with libraries to build information tools and services that help residents engage with their community and local government. This is a great way for libraries to *explore new opportunities to support civic engagement*. Limited funding is available for students working on these projects. The School of Information also seeks clients to submit projects for a variety of other client-based courses including library and archives projects, website redesign, and data analysis. View our full call for projects, <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XXqCsJ5MZ2VMMVoY7acqieEb6jdGSNpuFNZwBpQ…> and feel free to share either of these messages widely. For questions about other opportunities, please email umsi.client.engagement(a)umich.edu. free registration available to libraries for College Bound Michigan
by Katie Wittenauer 08 Aug '22

08 Aug '22

Good afternoon, Michigan library community, I'm writing from Michigan College Access Network <https://micollegeaccess.org/> to share details about the 2022-23 cycle of College Bound Michigan (CBMI) <https://micollegeaccess.org/initiatives/cbmi>, our statewide program that helps community leaders, educators, school counselors, and college advisers create systems and practices that connect all students with the opportunity for formal education beyond high school, including postsecondary certificates and academic degrees. *If you currently (or have the ability to) work with high school seniors in a direct programming capacity, you are eligible for this free program. * CBMI brings together all of the statewide initiatives — Michigan College Month <https://micollegeaccess.org/initiatives/cbmi/college-month>, College Cash Campaign <https://micollegeaccess.org/initiatives/cbmi/cash>, and College Decision Day <https://micollegeaccess.org/initiatives/cbmi/decision-day> — into one campaign to help bring Michigan closer to Sixty by 30. As a CBMI Host Site, you will have access to: - Exclusive grant opportunities - Promotional materials - Student-facing, grab-and-go resources - Counselor/adviser/coordinator-facing toolkits and implementation guides - Professional development opportunities This is the first time we're opening CBMI up to community organizations, so we will be working to adapt some of our resources to be applicable to a larger group of organizations. We will be intentionally creating library-specific resources for CBMI and will welcome all feedback on that. Registration will remain open for schools and community-based organizations through the fall, but signing up now ensures timely delivery of resources and helps us determine the best ways to support participating sites. An online application is available here <https://mcan.smapply.org/prog/cbmi2223/>. *As you are applying, please note that the application is still very school-centric, but you can fill out what is applicable to you and put N/A for anything that isn't (for example, the school B-code). If you have any questions as you complete the application, contact Kiersten Nolan <https://micollegeaccess.org/staff/kiersten-nolan>, strategy assistant for high school innovation.* Thank you, and have a great week!
