Hello! I am happy to announce the MI Seed Library Network's 2022 Seed Library Summit will take place via Zoom on October 23, 2022, from 12 pm until 3 pm. The agenda is still being finalized at this writing, but anyone who manages a seed library or is in the planning process of creating a seed library is invited to attend. The Seed Library Summit is an annual event to facilitate connections between Michigan seed librarians and share ideas, information, and concerns. Please consider participating because we can learn so much from each other about the successes and challenges of seed libraries around the state. Service Contracts with Neighboring Townships

Hello, As our contract with a neighboring township for library service needs to be re-signed, my Library Board is gathering information. Especially looking for information from Class 2 size libraries. If you have a contract with a township, village, etc. could you answer the following questions: 1. What is the contract's flat out fee (not including penal fines/state aid)? 2. What is the population of your area that provides millage funds and what is the population of the contract service? 3. How many cardholders in the contract service area plus total in all do you serve? 4. How do you calculate what the contract flat fee should be? 5. What Class size library are you? We are reviewing options of how to calculate a flat contract fee as penal fines in our county have dropped significantly and the amount we receive via the contract has actually decreased/remained stagnant over the last 11 years and my Board is thinking this is not fair to our township who funds us through a millage in perpetuity which has increased a lot in 11 years. We will explore the Connected Learning principles of relationships, interests and opportunities and how to apply the theory into practice. Using the concepts of CT as a problem-solving framework, we will take part in an activity that introduces library staff to a project they can use for teen programming. Participate in hands-on, interactive learning and discuss what CL and CT are and how they can be integrated into teen activities. This workshop will help participants scaffold knowledge they may already have about CL and CT and use it to recognize the ways in which CT supports CL. Instructor: Leah Delia Larson is a Youth Development Program Leader for Central Minnesota 4-H. Leah has extensive expertise in various levels of education. She started her career in education in 2001, and has taught everything from middle school ESL and special education in Texas to elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. Most recently, she worked with the Minnesota Department of Education as a LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) Grant Coordinator/School and Teen Services Consultant and has worked in K-12 schools as a library media specialist. Leah is passionate about building partnerships to expand youth programming, culturally relevant curriculum, bilingualism and social and emotional health and well-being. Leah has been a trainer and assisted in development of the YALSA Transforming Teen Services course work since 2019. Space is limited and there will be a waitlist. We are seeking a Director for the Frankenmuth Wickson District Library, the public library serving the City of Frankenmuth, Frankenmuth Township, and portions of Blumfield Township. Frankenmuth, best known as a thriving tourist town in Michigan, is also a city of significant services for its residents. The school district ranks high within the state and nation. The library features an extensive array of programming for all ages, and the staff includes several part time librarians and librarians who are specialists in Cataloging, Marketing and Children’s and Youth Programming. OUR LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY: Plymouth District Library is located in busy downtown Plymouth, MI, midway between Detroit and Ann Arbor. We serve the Plymouth Community which is comprised of 36,650 residents living in the City of Plymouth and the Charter Township of Plymouth, as well as the patrons of 75 Detroit-area libraries through a reciprocal borrowing agreement facilitated by The Library Network. The library serves as a significant community hub and maintains strong partnerships with local and regional community groups, governments, schools, businesses, and cultural organizations. Plymouth’s rich history has included the library for nearly 100 years. Strong community support has resulted in a dedicated perpetual millage, a robust Friends organization, and more than 100 adult volunteers. Pre- pandemic, over a 1,000 visitors a day used the library to participate in programs, use our meeting and study rooms, borrow materials, use technology, and connect with others. They may also carry out ongoing or special projects to support collection management and programs. Schedules include evening and weekend hours, including Sundays. JOB DUTIES: • Provides all library users with assistance in reference, readers advisory, and information literacy • Technology skills on a variety of information delivery platforms, such as chat, text, email, phone, fax, mobile devices, social media, content management systems, audio, and video • Assist patrons using online library catalog, e-resources such as e-book and streaming platforms and research databases, public access computers, copiers, and print management system • Strong online searching and information evaluation skills • May assist librarians in special projects in collection management or promotion, such as creating displays • Participate in programs and special events as assigned • Attend and participate in staff meetings and committees • Demonstrate respect and support of diversity and inclusion of cultural values, and continually develop cultural awareness and understanding of self and others • Performs other tasks as assigned REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Combination of education and experience, including Bachelor’s degree or two or more years of related experience/training • One to two years’ experience providing direct customer service • General computer skills such as word processing and Internet searching • Ability to communicate effectively by phone, computer, and in person • Familiarity with library services and resources preferred • Enthusiasm for learning and adapting to new ideas and technologies • Interpersonal and judgmental skills necessary to work effectively with library staff and patrons in a busy environment • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patrons, managers, and coworkers • Must work effectively with adults, teens, and youth, and be enthusiastic about library services for all ages • Flexibility in scheduling required; this position requires evenings and weekends throughout the year, including Sundays.
