Upcoming Virtual Event at BPL- Speaking with the Dead: What Bones Can Tell Us About Life in the Past
by Mick Howey 30 Oct '23

30 Oct '23

Hello Michlib-l, Please join us at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 4th for the event Speaking with the Dead: What Bones Can Tell Us About Life in the Past. Dead men tell no tales - unless of course they are being looked at by an archaeologist! Then they often can tell quite a few tales, from where they grew up to what they ate to how old they were when they died. Join archaeologist Ellen Green to see how skeletons can help us build biographies of the people they once were, and how that helps us understand past civilizations. Learn how the latest forensic and medical knowledge can be applied to people who died thousands of years ago in order to create a window into their lives and their deaths. This presentation will include pictures of (archeological) human remains. Ellen Green is a PhD researcher at the University of Reading in England, specializing in human remains. Prior to her return to academia she was a field archaeologist in London for 5 years, and she has worked on sites from every period in the city's history. She developed a love of archaeology through many visits to Roman ruins and castles in the UK over many vacations, which inspired a fascination with the past. She is also a big fan of Indiana Jones. This is a virtual event. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. Tap here <https://www.baldwinlib.org/calendar/#/events/7Obby6ZTHt/instances/W7rWdqcT9…> to register. Hope to see you there! Juvenile Nonfiction
by Melissa Adkins 30 Oct '23

30 Oct '23

Hello All, While tackling many projects to get this library back on its feet and in good shape, one of the problems has been a very outdated collection that was not being weeded or added to for awhile. While some of this was fairly easy to fix, one collection that I am concerned about is the Juvenile Nonfiction. Does anybody still use reps and buy full sets (planets, presidents, states, etc)? Are you finding that more cost effective or productive? Getting the collection in decent order in piecemeal fashion seems like it might not be efficient at this point, so I would love to hear recommendations about who you work with. Thanks, Melissa Adkins (she/her) Library Director Ecorse Public Library 4184 W. Jefferson Ave. Ecorse, MI 48229 313-389-2030 ecorselibrary(a)gmail.com

[LEO Banner] --- PRESS RELEASE --- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, October 30, 2023 CONTACT: Nicole Klisch<mailto:klischn@michigan.gov> <mailto:olsend1@michigan.gov>517-512-5209 New Career Training Scholarship Program Offers Michiganders an Opportunity to Gain Skills for In-Demand Jobs The Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship provides students up to $4,000 over two years to attend an eligible career training program in Michigan. Lansing, Mich.-Today, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) is announcing the launch of the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship, a new career training scholarship designed to help individuals gain skills needed to prepare for in-demand jobs. "Through programs like the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship, we are preparing Michiganders for rewarding careers in high-demand industries while supporting businesses with the highly skilled talent they need to compete and grow," said Susan Corbin, director of LEO. "Investments like these are critical to helping fuel the jobs that are vital to our state's economic momentum and our goals to expand economic prosperity to all." The Skills Scholarship is backed by a $10 million investment through the state budget and adds on to the Michigan Achievement Scholarship launched by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last year<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDAsInVy…> to lower the cost of higher education for Michiganders, starting with the class of 2023. Under the program, graduating high school students will be eligible to receive up to $4,000 over two years to attend an eligible career training program in Michigan. Eligible career training programs were selected to ensure students will receive training and skills that will ultimately lead to in-demand jobs with high paying wages. "There should be a path for every Michigan high school graduate to pursue education after high school, which is increasingly a necessity for good wages in high-demand jobs. The Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship provides yet another opportunity for students to pursue their dreams," said Sarah Szurpicki, director of LEO's Office of Sixty by 30. "As we continue to move Michigan forward, it is also helping get us closer to the state's Sixty by 30<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVy…> goal of having 60% of adults with an industry-recognized skill certificate or college degree by 2030." To apply, interested students must complete an application through the Michigan Student Aid Student Scholarships and Grants portal (MiSSG), administered through the Michigan Department of Treasury. "The Michigan Achievement Scholarship has been a great addition to the breadth of tuition-assistance scholarships managed by MI Student Aid, reducing the costs for students to attend an eligible Michigan college or university by thousands of dollars," said Diann Cosme, director of Student Scholarships, Grants and Outreach for the Treasury. "The Skills Scholarship offers another pathway to this program, and I encourage any student who has recently graduated with their high school diploma or equivalency to take the step to see if they qualify, view eligible programs and apply for this incredible opportunity." Eligibility To be eligible for the Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship, applicants must: * Be a Michigan resident for at least the immediately preceding year. * Have graduated from high school in Michigan with a diploma or a certificate of completion or achieved a high school equivalency certificate in 2023 or after. * Have not yet earned an associate or bachelor's degree. * Have not yet earned a degree, certificate, or other credential with this scholarship.
