waivers for offsite activities
by Elissa Zimmer 11 Jan '24

11 Jan '24

Hello, Staff at a couple of our branches would like to hold sledding programs offsite at a local golf course and a local park. Has anyone done anything similar to this and if so, did you require participants to sign a waiver or put on the advertising that patrons "sled at their own risk"? LM's Library Science Collection - Copyright & Fair Use
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 11 Jan '24

11 Jan '24

Copyright is a central issue for libraries of all types. Most of our collections are materials that are the intellectual property of a content creator, like an author or artist, or the publisher. So what is under copyright and what does that mean for our users? We help students learn to cite when they use information in class work, but it also applies materials posted on social media, used by businesses and hobbyists, etc. How do we encourage fair and legal use of the content in our collections? LM is highlighting topical Library Science titles from our collection in occasional emails. Here are selected titles on copyright and fair use purchased recently. You can search MeLCat for LM titles and you can also check our New Library Science Collection titles at https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/libraries/libsci. Click on the ANSWER catalog link and use "Library Science Collection" as one of the search terms in the Advanced Search - Notes field and you will pull only the library science collection titles. Copyright & Fair Use titles: * Copyright law for librarians and educators : creative strategies and practical solutions / Kenneth D. Crews / ALA Editions, 2020. * Complete copyright for K-12 librarians and educators / Carrie Russell / ALA Editions, 2023. * Public rights : copyright's public domains / Graham Greenleaf, David Lindsay / Cambridge University Press, 2019. * Creative commons for educators and librarians / Creative Commons / ALA Editions, 2020. * Intellectual property and information rights for librarians / John Schlipp / Libraires Unlimited, 2019. * Foundations of intellectual freedom / Emily J.M. Knox / ALA Neal-Schuman, 2023. REMINDER: Titles are available through interlibrary loan only right now, as our MeLCat delivery is temporarily offline while we prepare to move to a new catalog. You can find the information on interlibrary loan borrowing from the Library of Michigan here - https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/about/libuseguidelines/guideforl…. The page references state employees, but libraries may also borrow from the collection through interlibrary loan. Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues getting a title. The Library Science Collection at LM is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Have a title you'd like us to purchase? Let me know!
