FW: Merit Webinar - BEAD Challenge Work Session for Anchor Institutions
by Sheryl Cormicle Knox 05 Apr '24

05 Apr '24

Is your library accurately represented on the Michigan Broadband map? Why should I care? One of the goals of the Michigan High Speed Internet Office (MIHI) is to make it possible for every community anchor institution in Michigan to have symmetrical gigabit speed Internet. And they have $1.6B to work with! Great! Show me the money! MIHI is working through the steps to obtain and allocate an historic investment in Internet infrastructure in Michigan. And its at a crucial stage. They have a map. It has flaws. And there is a window open until April 23rd to gather corrections that will maximize investment in your community. Learn more about the MIHI BEAD map challenge on their website<https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/mihi/funding-opportunities/be…>. There are recorded webinars and slides and documentation. And attend a real-time work session sponsored by Merit Network next Tuesday April 9 1-2pm (info and link below) __________________________________________ Sheryl Cormicle Knox, Technology Director Capital Area District Libraries – Administration 401 S. author visit
by Rochelle Collins 05 Apr '24

05 Apr '24

Sara, We have what we call hybrid programs. If the author is remote we have zoom, but also show it on our large screen in the community room and facebook live if they allow. If the presentation is in person we still record and play it live on facebook for remote access. We've found that everyone loves the options. Rochelle A. Camera Used for Virtual Programs
by Sara Horn 05 Apr '24

05 Apr '24

Hello Everyone, We are going to hold our first virtual author visit in the coming months. Since a large portion of the Library's service has limited to no access for personal internet; I plan I having a large group at the library that will participate as a group. I plan on projecting the visit onto our screen for everyone to see and hear the author. My question to all of you is what camera do you use for these types of situations? Thank you! MeL Minute: Earth Day eResources for K-12
by Ann Kaskinen 04 Apr '24

04 Apr '24

[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]Every April since 1970, Americans have been celebrating Earth Day and recognizing the importance of protecting Earth’s natural resources for future generations. The eResources in the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) offer articles on a wide range of topics related to Earth Day that include biodiversity, climate change, deforestation, pollution, recycling, renewable energy, sustainability, and dozens more. The importance of Earth Day and the positive results of the first Earth Day celebration have been felt by Americans for over 5 decades. An article<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> in the April 2023 edition of EcoNews reminds us of the importance of the first Earth Day, as the development of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air Act resulted within a year of that initial celebration. Ultimately, a 66.9 percent decrease in air pollution has been realized because of these landmark changes. In observance of Earth Day, celebrated every year on April 22, consider sharing the eResources in MeL with the students in your life. Elementary There are two sections that stand out in PebbleGo<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=pe…> Social Studies. Helping the Environment has read-aloud articles on Cleaning up Litter, Composting, Reusing and Recycling, and Saving Water. Additionally, under Holidays there is an article on the activities and history associated with Earth Day. In the eBook K-8 Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> students are introduced to recycling in the title, Go Green by Recycling,<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> and enjoy some Earth-Friendly Earth Day Crafts<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> from the eBook Public Library Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. Middle School Zero Waste Kids,<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> also from the eBook Public Library Collection, explains the process for making recycled paper as well as ideas for repurposing materials and building a compost bin. Under the Earth’s environment at a glance<https://school.eb.com/levels/middle/article/Earths-environment-at-a-glance/…> in Britannica School Middle<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb…>, there are several curated lists of linked content on Climate, Ecological Concerns, Environmental Issues, Planet Earth, and related Biographies. High School Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ov…> showcases a wide range of content including videos, audio files, images, viewpoints, and articles such as “Debunking the ‘Recycling Myth’, Starting with Its Symbol” which highlights one woman’s quest to firm up labeling laws. Lastly, Earth Day & the Environmental Movement<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> from the eBook High School Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> delivers a detailed history of what led to Earth Day and the progress and failures since. These eResources are just the tip of the iceberg. Keep exploring to get ready for April 22! If you have any MeL eResources questions or issues, contact melerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melerhelp@mcls.org> for help. Brought to you by Ann Kaskinen from the MeL Team.
