The West Bloomfield Township Public Library has an opening for a part-time Youth Programming Associate at the Westacres Branch Library. Please see below for details: POSITION: Youth Programming Associate (Early Childhood Focus). Part-time (24 hours per week). Includes evening and weekend hours (Saturday/Sunday). QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree in child development or Associate’s degree in education with emphasis on early childhood or equivalent degree is preferred; other degrees related to the position and combined with relevant experience will be considered. 1-2 years of experience working with children ages birth to five years old, preferably in an educational or library setting. Experience and expertise in programming, especially for parents, caregivers and children from birth to five. Strong interpersonal skills. RESPONSIBILITIES: Extensive programming for children birth to five, parents and caregivers; Provide customer service and some reader’s advisory to patrons of all ages at a central service desk; Collection development and maintenance of the Library’s realia collection and the development of in-house youth learning activities. Creating a Library of Things Bookable Collection-Questions!

Our library has some giant outdoor games in our Library of Things collection which are very popular with our patrons. A number of patrons have said that they would like to be able to book these items for specific events instead of going on a waitlist and hoping they get them at the right time. For those of you who have a Library of Things bookable collection, we have some questions about creating a booking system: How does your booking system work? Do you offer this via your ILS, from a third party vendor, or did you create your own system? Do you purchase duplicate things for your booking collection or did you move your existing things to the bookable collection (no longer available for general requests without a bookable time) Is there any other advice you have/ptifalls to avoid? Climate mitigation, or the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, was addressed in our previous article, “Getting Started with Climate Action Planning.” The next area, adaptation, requires strategies that enable personal, institutional, and community-wide preparation and adjustment in the face of the likely impacts of climate change on our local geography. We can no longer simply focus on our hopes that efforts will reduce the impacts of climate change on the future. Even if we did everything right to reduce GHG emissions in the next seven years, we will still experience increasingly severe weather patterns, heat waves, and systemic impacts on food systems, flood plains, and sea levels for the next three decades. Confronting the reality of the damage that has been done to the climate and having a realistic idea of what the local impacts of climate change is an essential component to future-proofing your library.
