Call for Proposals for UPRLC Conference in September

Although the weather in the north may not reflect it this week, Spring is coming and with it the annual UPRLC 2024 Annual Conference call for proposals! This year's theme is Bold Library Futures, and the conference will be held at the Joseph Heirman University Center on the campus of Bay College in Escanaba on September 25th and 26th. Just in time for Fall Colors! To go along with this year's theme, we are looking for Bold ideas, programs, and sessions that look at where libraries will be going in the Future. Areas of special interest include: * Artificial intelligence * The library as community center * Growing your services * Meeting customer service expectations and Defining boundaries * Making positive work/life balance in your library to avoid burnout While these are areas of interest, we welcome other topics as well. If you are passionate about it, tell us why! Each breakout session should be approximately 45-50 minutes long. The UPRLC Annual Conference registration fee will be waived for all those presenting a breakout session at the meeting. The topic of this virtual mini conference is Diverse Youth Literature and will feature guest speakers, student presentations and a faculty panel discussion. Featured Speakers: *Desiree Cooper* A 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow, *Desiree Cooper <https://www.descooper.com/bio>* is a former attorney, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and community activist. She is an evocative speaker on the themes of racial and gender equality, reproductive freedom, family-positive public policy and the welfare of women and girls. Cooper’s latest publication is a children’s picture book, Nothing Special, published by the Wayne State University Press. The book is based upon the friendship between her father and grandson. It has earned a starred review from *Booklist*, inclusion in the New York Public Library’s list of the Top Ten Children’s Books of 2022, and winner of the 2023 Paterson Prize for Books for Young People. She was a founding board member of Cave Canem, a national residency for black poets, and has received residencies at Kimbilio and Ragdale. Having forged a 30-year career in Detroit, she now lives in the Virginia Beach area where she cares for her aging mother and raises her three grandchildren. *Sarah Park Dahlen* *Sarah Park Dahlen <https://sarahpark.com/>* joined the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois as an associate professor in August 2021. She previously served as an associate professor of library and information science at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dahlen's research addresses Korean adoption in children’s literature, Frank Carpenter and Frances Carpenter’s writings for children, and diversity in children's literature and library education. Olson’s debut novel is *Middle School is No Place for Magic*, published by the Ann Arbor District Library’s Fifth Avenue Press. The book was listed as an Amazon Hot New Release in the #1 Teen and YA Fiction Category: Being a Teen in September 2023. Olson also developed and hosts MG Workshops, a short story workshop for middle grade students that is available both in-person and virtually. Olson, the youngest of five kids became an aunt at the age of three. It was her great-nieces and nephews that gave her nickname Mimi. She lives in Ann Arbor with her husband, daughter and two very spoiled cats. *Sonia Alejandra Rodriguez* *Sonia Alejandra Rodríguez <https://soniaarodriguez.com/>* (she/they) is a Professor in the English Department at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY, where they teach composition, literature, and creative writing. Sonia Alejandra received their Ph.D. in English from the Department of English at the University of California, Riverside. Their research introduces “conocimiento narratives” as a way to read realist fiction within Latinx children’s and young adult literature. They are currently working on a monograph on this topic. Chief Executive – Kansas City Public Library (MO) The Kansas City Public Library<https://kclibrary.org/> (Missouri) (“Library”) is seeking a dynamic and visionary Chief Executive to collaboratively develop and implement the Library's strategic vision. In partnership with the Board of Trustees (“Board”), the Chief Executive ensures the fulfillment of the Library’s mission and its future success, while promoting and supporting the highest level of customer service. A forward-thinking leader will operate with a high degree of autonomy, expertly communicate, and problem-solve while keeping the Board and other stakeholders appropriately apprised of both internal conditions and external developments. The Library has been recognized nationally for over 15 years for its presentations of signature events in library facilities, often in cooperation with major regional institutions and independent bookstores, bringing new and diverse groups into the Library for topical and timely programs. Located in the center of a bi-state metropolitan area with a population of over 2.2 million, the Kansas City Public Library is its own taxing jurisdiction with a main Central Library, nine other physical branches, a digital branch, and an established outreach program reaching over 250,000 people. Library highlights include the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Central Library and vibrant and welcoming branch locations. With 236 FTE and a $30 million annual budget, the next leader will focus attention on institutional culture, developing and implementing the Library’s next strategic plan, developing professional relationships with staff and other stakeholders, promoting collaborative partnerships through civic engagement; and defining and develop an effective internal organizational structure. In addressing the needs of the Library’s service district, the Chief Executive will champion diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) within the Library and the community to ensure that the Library is a welcoming and supportive environment for all community members. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be comfortable and effective in fundraising activities, and through knowledge of current trends, technologies, and best practices for library services, demonstrate a personal passion for the mission and work of libraries. As would be expected, several of the Library’s current initiatives address challenges and opportunities related to its service district including social justice, immigrant services, addressing the digital divide, social services, and physical security within and adjacent to its branches. The Library has begun a comprehensive review of the capacities and locations of its existing 10 locations relative to community needs and new requirements. Other initiatives include collection development, especially digital materials and services, and the promotion and use of internet technologies to augment physical branches and materials. Situated on Missouri's western border with Kansas, near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, Kansas City is often recognized for its affordability and quality of life with over 240 distinctive, eclectic neighborhoods. Rich with cultural experiences such as museums, theaters, public parks, and festivals and music clubs highlighting the local tradition of jazz music and the blues. The City sponsors several professional sports teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. Responsibilities: Provide leadership to achieve the mission and goals of the Library by implementing system-wide strategic planning, development, and evaluation of all library services. Oversees all functions of the library system, including public and support services, fundraising campaigns, facility renovations and expansions, finance, human resources, support of emerging technology, and public relations. Establishes and leads a Diversity Equity and Inclusion vision in partnership with the executive leadership team that fosters a culture of continuous learning, feedback, and best practices. Formulates or revises policies and procedures affecting the library's operations; directs and works with senior leadership in matters related to the library; advises and supports the Library Board of Trustees in the board’s governing role through the development of appropriate policies for institutional and board governance, development of reports and other information and provision of Library Board orientation, ongoing training, and professional involvement. Provides leadership in library advocacy and community outreach through public relations strategies, regular and frequent contact with news media, and delivery of presentations to community groups on library issues. The Chief Executive participates in community and professional activities and boards and cultivates effective professional relationships with local government and legislative bodies, library staff and management, professional and institutional organizations, state and national library organizations, educational institutions at all levels, and the community at large. Hi all, it's me again. Here is a Canva file that I've shared with CSLP <https://www.canva.com/design/DAF8DIgd9SE/kb3K2piWpTFuWvVxFNDdEQ/edit?utm_co…> (they didn't include all of these templates in the kit) so I wanted to expressly share the original file with you. *Please make a copy *(because I have messed up the template version in Canva) before you make any edits so that everyone has the opportunity to use these for customizing. There are pages that offer suggestions for where to place your logo and text to use, along with blank pages to do what you like with completely. I've also added some of the png/vector/transparent clipart from CSLP on some of the pages too. Special thanks to Jeff at Ferndale District Library for adding some.
