New York Times Comment About Library Workers
by Megan Summers 06 Dec '24

06 Dec '24

A relative sent me a comment from a New York Times article entitled "Human Interaction Is Now a Luxury Good." I wanted to share it with my fellow library workers! "I worked as a librarian in academia for many years. One day while I was on the reference desk I got a call from an emeritus professor who had some questions about navigating the university website. During our interaction, he said repeatedly how nice it was to immediately get a helpful person on the phone who took the time to answer his questions, especially someone who was nice and kind. Anyway, I do hope the author of this book interviewed librarians also. They are on the front lines, doing this important work to help people get their information needs met, which can be especially difficult given how much misinformation is out there. Public librarians in particular also have to deal with a lot of patron anger, especially these days. This is exhausting even on the best day, all while getting paid a fraction of what they really deserve in exchange for this kind of emotional labor." Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Ransomware is a form of malware that threatens the security of your electronic devices when it gains access to the device. It then encrypts and disables the entire operating system or individual files, locking a user out of their systems and preventing access to their information. One of the most common paths to a ransomware infection is downloading malware by opening an attachment or clicking on a link in an unsolicited email. These emails trick users by pretending to be from a source they trust, which is also known as phishing. "Cybercriminals are becoming more and more sophisticated," Nessel said. "To protect yourself, take the time to understand ransomware attacks and learn ways to protect yourself from bad actors." There are a number of actions residents can take to protect against ransomware: * Make sure all your devices are protected with comprehensive security software and keep all software up to date. * Update software often, as patches for flaws are typically included in each update. * Don't respond to emails or text messages from people you don't know, and only download applications from trusted sources. * Never click on links or open attachments in unsolicited emails. * Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks, since many of them are not secure, and cybercriminals can snoop on your internet usage. * Back up your data onto an external hard drive or cloud regularly. * Remember to unplug your external device when not in use as some malware can also infect devices attached to your computer. * Never use USB sticks from unknown sources. Visit the Stop Ransomware webpage<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.cisa.gov%2Fstopransomwa…> for additional guidance regarding ransomware. Hello Library World! The Southgate Veterans Memorial Library is doing some re-organizing of closets and we have a few things that we are looking to get rid of. If you would like any of these things, please let me know and be advised that you will have to come collect them. We have a rocking chair (picture attached) We have what I think are book displays (never seen them in use, but I'm told we've had them in the closet for as long as the director can remember, so out they go). We have about 30 short ones, (pictures attached) and 60 long ones that are basically twice the length of the short ones. Let me know if you are interested. (Or if you know exactly how the black display things are supposed to be used, because I'm curious.) MeL Minute: Celebrating Human Rights
by Laura Warren-Gross 05 Dec '24

05 Dec '24

[cid:image005.png@01DB46F4.FB82F5F0]December is recognized as Human Rights Month, with the theme of this year’s Human Rights Day<https://www.ohchr.org/en/get-involved/campaign/hrd2024> on December 10 being “Our Rights, Our Future, Right now.” According to the United Nations, this year’s theme calls us to “acknowledge the importance of human rights in our everyday lives.” Using the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL), we can learn more about our human rights and how they are impacted by some of the biggest issues in the news today. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights<https://www.ohchr.org/en/human-rights/universal-declaration/translations/en…> was adopted in 1948 and many current laws and treaties are based on the document. Its creation took the work of dedicated people including the chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt. In "Eleanor Roosevelt in the UN Chronicle (1946-1949): On the Making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=37e9d0fc-4407-38c4-92c6-0…>," available in Academic Search Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, Meghan Lynn provides a brief history of the work that went into the drafting of the document and its significance. As we reflect on this document, there is still work to be done. "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 75: Our Shared Values and Path to Solutions<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=cd2f0169-8a18-3a74-bce5-9…>" by Volker Turk in United Nations Chronicle (Online)<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> details current areas of concern regarding human rights such as inequity and polarization among people, conflict around the world, environmental issues, and artificial intelligence (AI). The Spring 2024 issue of the Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, available in Legal Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, is focused on the impact of climate change throughout the world, including peer-reviewed articles about environmental concerns in Ukraine, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. They address the important issues of Article 3: right to life, liberty and the security of person. With the introduction of AI, there are concerns about privacy as set forth in Article 12. "Don’t Let Governments Buy AI Systems That Ignore Human Rights<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=68d48f09-bf8e-384c-b010-6…>" by Merve Hickok and Evanna Hu in Issues Science and Technology<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> from Science Reference Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> points out that facial recognition software can be wildly inaccurate and lead to unjust arrest and incarceration. The authors suggest that any procurement of AI by a government entity should be screened for adherence to human rights not only for privacy, but also to ensure “equal protection against any discrimination, access to social security, and access to effective remedies.” As the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights celebrates its 76th anniversary, MeL offers eResources<https://mel.org/az.php> that can help us think about human rights and our impact on the world around us.
