Questions about Library Of Things Policies
by Jolene Faber 07 Feb '25

07 Feb '25

Reaching out to see the procedures on a few things related to Library Of Things Collection for libraries that have one. We are running into a few issues and looking to see what other libraries are doing when these issues arise. 1st - Does your library have a replacement part cost sheet. If so, how did you come up with those prices? We have purchased things for our LOT collection off of Amazon and say for example a remote goes missing, it is near impossible to get a replacement for that specific model without having to purchase the whole "unit" again; so we have to try and find a universal remote. 2nd- Currently, our patrons can only checkout one LOT item at a time. The problem we are running into is that they return that item and want to check out another LOT item they either have on hold or off the floor but we haven't had time to process the return of the LOT item they just returned (currently policy is we go through the item they return to check that all parts are there before letting them checkout another item. Some items are easy to check in and it's not an issue but items that have a lot of smaller parts take longer to check and we don't always have a person available to go through it right when they return it). Patrons are getting frustrated they can't check out another LOT item right after they return one and other than bypassing the check in process we are struggling with a solution. If anyone that has a LOT collection that has run into these issues or has any insights on solutions would be greatly appreciated. free online program: The Early History of Civil Rights Cases at the Michigan Supreme Court
by Jennifer Dye 06 Feb '25

06 Feb '25

The Michigan Supreme Court’s history of civil rights cases is complicated. In this presentation, Joseph J. Gavin will begin to unpack some of its earliest decisions. He is the current president of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society, and has been a licensed attorney for nearly two decades. New this month: we will be offering the program in person at the Knapp Branch as well as on Zoom. While Zoom is probably more convenient for most, you are welcome to join us in person—possibly once the weather improves. Tuesday, February 11 6:00-7:30 p.m. Please register on Eventbrite for Zoom: https://dpl-Civil-Rights-MI-Supreme.eventbrite.com You are not required to register to attend in person, but please do so if you want to be notified in case the branch needs to close. Branch hours are listed in my sig below. If you would like a jpg or pdf of the flyer, please let me know. This is another of DPL's programs in partnership with the Detroit League of Women Voters, promoting voter education and tools for action. It will be available on the League of Women Voters subchannel of DPL's YouTube channel later. Have a rained-out clause in a program contract?
by aldenlib＠torchlake.com 06 Feb '25

06 Feb '25

Hi everyone, There's an outside venue in our small town where we can present library programs. I'm close to booking a musician for August 2025. The stage is covered, but the audience grassy portion is not. Do you have experience with having to cancel an event due to rain, and what would you pay the entertainer if that happened - half? He and I agreed on $350 for a one-person show. Thanks!! -- _Susan Riegler_ Susan Riegler, Director Alden District Library 231/331-4318

ATTN DIRECTORS: Branch Library Maintenance Cost Contribution Question
by Dan Hutchins 06 Feb '25

06 Feb '25

Hi Everyone, Van Buren District Library is a seven location, former county library system. Going back to the 1940s six of our branch facilities have always been provided and maintained by the local governments of our service area, with first the County Library, then District Library, staffing, stocking, furnishing, and equipping them. A predecessor of mine began conferring “branch grants” to the local governments who provided library facilities. From time to time, when the Library District found it had excess funds at the end of a fiscal year, it would give $5,000 “grants” to each of the local governments who provided the branches, with no strings attached, as a way of saying “thank you” for providing and maintaining the library’s facilities. Last year one of the local governments who had received library grant funds challenged this practice. Their legal counsel argued the branch grants, as given, weren’t authorized expenditures under our establishing law, PA 24 of 1989 AKA the District Library Establishment Act. Our legal counsel agreed with them and advised us to stop giving the grants. For every action though, there is an equal and opposite reaction and now more than one local government is coming after us for maintenance contributions, in spite of the fact that our branch library agreements with them clearly specify that maintaining the branch facilities are their responsibility and their responsibility alone. My Board has asked me to reach-out to my colleagues and ask if there are other multi-branch library systems in Michigan with similar arrangements, where the library operates facilities provided and maintained by local governments, and if so, does your system contribute toward the maintenance costs? If your system does, how much and under what conditions? Not a simple question to ask or answer, so please know I appreciate any time and thought you put into this on my behalf. Best, Dan Hutchins Executive Director Van Buren District Library 200 North Phelps Street Decatur, MI 49045 dhutchins(a)vbdl.org http://www.vbdl.org 269-423-4771

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Sun Meals to Go program, which in Michigan is referred to as the Rural Non-Congregate program, is available to Michigan children in areas that are designated as rural according to the USDA. Non-congregate meal service means that families pick up more than one day’s worth of Meals to Go from the site, usually once a week. MDE administers both the Summer Food Service and Rural Non-Congregate programs through its Office of Nutrition Services. “There is a vital need to reach out to the state’s most vulnerable young people to provide nutritious food,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “MDE remains committed to leveraging every available option to feed more children during the summer.” In 2024, the Rural Non-Congregate option for summer feeding sponsors grew and reached 3.9 million households of eligible children in Michigan. That year, there were 1,470 dedicated Summer Food Service Program sites throughout the state that helped serve over 7 million meals to families to provide food security for children. With the continuous support of sponsors, the Rural Non-Congregate and Meet Up and Eat Up Summer Food Service programs are expected to serve even more children. Anyone interested in fighting hunger in children by serving meals or for more information can contact mde-sfsp(a)michigan.gov<mailto:mde-sfsp@michigan.gov> or call 517-241-5374.
