The Harper Woods Public Library is a PA164 library serving the residents of Harper Woods, a diverse community of 15,492 residents in northeast Wayne County. It has an annual budget of approximately $550,000. The director reports to a five-person library board of directors. DUTIES: Under the direction of the library board, the director will have the following responsibilities: •Recommend, draft, and implement policy •Turn in employee hours and bills to the city’s Finance Department •Manage, hire, and mentor library personnel and direct their training •Write grants and develop fundraising activities •Director the maintenance and repair of the library facilities and grounds •Serve as library liaison in the community •Serve on library committees for local or state organizations •Prepare for millage renewals QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate should possess excellent management, public relations, budgeting, facility management, and communication skills and believe that the patrons and the staff are the most important assets to the Library. •ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science •Three years of professional library experience demonstrating abilities in management, budgeting, planning, and supervision •Permanent Professional Certificate from the Library of Michigan as required for a Class IV library, or the ability to obtain this certificate within six months of hire date •Ability to effectively use automated library systems, computers, and other library technologies. •Effective interpersonal skills consisting of creative and diplomatic management abilities. COMPENSATION: Salary offered is $60,000. Safety Procedures

Hi all, I would love to hear what your procedure is for an active shooter. We are a very small town and currently don't even have one in place. I am also wondering if your library has any procedures or protocol for if/when your local school district goes on lockdown for any reason? September 16, 2024, 10:30am-12:00pm - Introduction to Michigan Paid Leave and Minimum Wage Changes The Michigan Supreme Court recently reinstated the original 2018 legislative language of The Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act, and the Earned Sick Time Act. The reinstated language goes into effect on February 21, 2025. Each act includes provisions which will change wage and leave policies and procedures for many Michigan employers-including public libraries. Labor and Employment attorney Mike Blum from Foster Swift will discuss the changes and what they may mean for Michigan Public Libraries. And if so, what criteria or policy do you have to govern which names are displayed on the wall? Is it for monetary donations, years of service to the library, local veterans, etc? Looking for display cabinets? Westland Public Library has these metal, wood, and glass display cabinets. (2) available to first available to pick up only. The measurements are 26" x 26" square and 5" high. They are quite fragile because all sides are glass. There are extension metal webbed sides for displaying items that are also available. Free to a library that could use them. Contact Sherri West by email, please. A scheduled time will need to be set up for moving will require our maintenance to be available in the building that day. Sad news

Good Afternoon Everyone, I am sad to let you all know that our security guard, Henry Ford, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Hoyt Library in downtown Saginaw yesterday. The shooter never entered the library and drove away fast after it happened. The police station is across the street from the library and it didn't take them long to make an arrest. The shooter was Henry's brother-in-law and it was a family dispute. I want to clarify, at no time were any library patrons or staff a target and nobody else was hurt. We followed our active shooter procedure and it worked. Please be prepared and review your procedures with staff. You never know... Also, please consider offering an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for your employees if you don't already. We work with Child and Family Services in Saginaw and they have been amazing. I made one phone call today and was able to contact a grief counselor who will meet with us tomorrow to help us process our grief and fears. Individual IEP sessions will be available for people who want to talk one-on-one with a counselor. EAP services are confidential and free for employees. MI-OST grant peer reviewers wanted

For those who do not receive the MASP email newsletter, peer reviewer applications are open for the 24-25 MI-OST grants. I did this last year and it was a great experience and I learned a lot about grant writing by reviewing applications. 2024-2025 Grant Peer Reviewer Application Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) Office of Education Partnerships, OST Grants Program, in partnership with Michigan Afterschool Partnership (MASP) calls for grant reviewers to assist with the 2024-25 Out-of-School Time Grant Application selections.
