The Lee Middle and High School Library, with district library media specialist Mr. Harry Coffill, is a new space for the Lee Middle and High School. Coffill’s work with administrative and teaching colleagues to create the newly constructed library, new learning opportunities for Godrey-Lee students, and improved elementary library spaces has had an outsized impact on the school community. Coffill’s partnership work with the Kent District Library provides additional materials, programming, and support for students in his community. His collaborations with fellow teaching staff give students access to independent reading resources and high-quality support. “Support for reading is foundational to educational achievement for students of all ages,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. This autobiographic book is a seamless blend of evocative black-and-white photographs and prose that weaves back and forth between the 1970s and today in and around the town of Newberry, Michigan. Wurdock’s lens wanders the landscape from main street of Newberry which recalls the bygone era of many of Michigan’s small towns to the “old, crumbling shacks” and “dilapidated and abandoned structures” he reaches by Jeep on an old two-track or subsequently on foot. Wisely, he obeys an internal shiver that warns him to keep out. Heaven knows what kind of injury you might sustain on a solo trip from such rural explorations. His camera is also invariably attracted to railroad engines and stations, logging and other industrial remnants that dot the Newberry area and surely many other locales of the U.P. Wurdock’s memoir roughly follows the seasons of a typical year, with asides along the way for the glories of the U.P’s extreme seasons. Along the way, like the reporter he is, he recounts memorable and colorful things in the life of Newberry such as the 44^th Independence Day Parade and its quirky traditions including the “water wars” between firemen and teenagers with water balloons, or the demise of the proprietor of the Tahqua Land Theater as it struggled to meet the digital age of projection. We learn about the importance of AM radio, such as the local station WNBY, to knit small communities together in land where cell service is iffy at best and people are on the move all day long. Safety Procedures

I am also wondering if your library has any procedures or protocol for if/when your local school district goes on lockdown for any reason? Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners Fall Meeting Thursday, November 14, 2024 Library of Michigan, Lansing MI The Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners (MMDP) will come together for an in-person meeting on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. As with all MMDP meetings, we will bring together a wide range of professionals and students engaged in creating and curating digital collections in Michigan and the surrounding region, including librarians, archivists, museum curators, historians, students, educators, and more. The goal of this meeting is to provide an opportunity for the MMDP community to share knowledge and make connections. New attendees are always welcome. **Submit Your Proposals for the 2024 MMDP Meeting** The MMDP Planning Group invites you to send your proposal for our November meeting. Proposals can be for Presentations (30-60 minutes), "Birds-of-a-Feather" Discussion Topics (approximately 30 minutes), Demonstrations (10 minutes), Lightning Talks (5 minutes), or a Poster. This is a great opportunity to reuse a poster shared at another conference! We welcome proposals from anyone, but are particularly interested in proposals from smaller institutions and students! CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! All public libraries in Michigan are CSLP members thanks to the Library of Michigan with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
