Child-sized Railings
by Cory Grimminck 18 Jul '13

18 Jul '13

We are a two-story library, with the children's area on the lower level. There are two flights of stairs to get to the lower level, and we currently have a regular, adult-sized, built-to-code, ADA-compliant railing. Recently, a patron attended our board meeting to suggest that we install a lower railing for small children to hold while using the stairs. Has anyone installed a lower railing for children? If so, has it caused behavioral issues with children climbing on it? If not, did you ever consider installing one? Thanks, Cory Grimminck Portland District Library

After school security/monitors
by Anne Keller 18 Jul '13

18 Jul '13

Hello, Our Library (Class 4) is investigating the possibility of having an after school monitor or security guard. We were wondering what other libraries' experiences were. Did they use a company? Volunteer? How did it work out? If you are willing to share your experiences, please reply off list to wilmaflintstone1616(a)yahoo.com. Thanks very much! Re-creating Eloise with D.E. Johnson: Tues., 7/23 at 7 p.m.
by Andy Schuck 16 Jul '13

16 Jul '13

The Westland Public Library is proud to welcome award-winning author D.E. Johnson on Tuesday, July 23rd from 7-8 p.m. Mr. Johnson will share the history from his most recent historical mystery, Detroit Breakdown, a book set on the grounds of the former Eloise Hospital. The hospital is a place of legend and myth, and was an important part of the lives of many people in the Westland and greater Detroit area. Johnson will discuss Eloise as it was in the early 1900s as well as the changes in the institution through the Great Depression. He has other tricks up his sleeve as well, with many interesting tidbits from Detroit-area history. Johnson is the author of three Detroit-based historical mysteries: The Detroit Electric Scheme, set in the early electric car industry and winner of a Michigan Notable Book Award; Motor City Shakedown, which explores the first mob war in Detroit history and is also a winner of the Michigan Notable Book Award; and his newest, Detroit Breakdown, which is largely set at Eloise Hospital and looks at mental health treatment in the early 20th Century. Johnson's books will be sold at this event. Refreshments served. Andy Schuck Reference Librarian Westland Public Library 6123 Central City Parkway Westland, MI 48185 phone: (734) 326-6123

Classic Microfilm Machine
by Debby Stassek 15 Jul '13

15 Jul '13

Hello All, VBDL has a classic microfilm machine available for adoption - free to a good home. It is an old, carrel-type Indus machine which was in very good working order the last time I used it. It's simple reel to reel mechanism is actually easier and more reliable than some of the newer models. However, the footprint is large. The machine requires some space. It is 25.5 inches wide, 27.25 deep, and 37.5 high. Pictures available at http://www1.youseemore.com/vanburen/contentpages.asp?loc=96. Please email Molly Wunderlich if you are interested, mwunderlich(a)vbdl.org. Free! You would need to arrange transportation for it.
