library leasing?
by Three Oaks Township Public Library 11 Sep '13

11 Sep '13

Hi all, If anyone has a policy about renting or leasing library space, I would be very grateful for a copy. Our building has a lot of unused space that could be providing revenue but we have one very troublesome board member that insists on seeing the "statute" that allows this. Thanks in advance! (Please excuse the duplicate postings.) Hello, Research librarian and published local historian Alan Naldrett will give a presentation at the Romeo District Library on the Toledo War, the relatively little-known conflict between Michigan and Ohio which is continued today in their famed collegiate sports rivalry. The talk will cover such topics as the players involved, the strategies of the armies, and the background behind the entire conflict. He will be presenting on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 PM at the Romeo District Library's Graubner Library, located at 65821 Van Dyke in Washington Township. Refreshments will be served and no registration is required! I am attaching a Powerpoint flyer with both poster-sized and quarter-sheet handouts if anyone would like to print some copies for patrons. Thanks in advance for your consideration. Thanks, Dominic McLaughlin Adult Services Librarian Romeo District Library

Hosting Driver's Training
by Michael McGuire 10 Sep '13

10 Sep '13

This looks to me like a much bigger question than " Hosting Driver's Training." It seems like a question of how the Library wants to serve and be a part of the community. It seems to me like the local PTO (presumably non-profit) is the organization that is putting on the event. The fact that they've hired someone who is licensed by the State to do it doesn't seem very different that a non-profit presenting a speaker or performer and paying that that individual a fee or honorarium. >From a community service point of view, it seem that making it possible for local folks to do this locally in a well-known and familiar environment would be a plus for the Library. Is it a certainty that the Library will be the venue or might the participants have to drive to another locality to have the classes? >From a public relations point of view, you'd be getting a lot of people into the library on a regular basis who might not otherwise be there and showing the community how you want to work with it on matters of community interest. Finally, it is educational and that is the Library's mission. All that said, if the company will pay for the venue, so much the better for the bottom line of the Library. Otherwise, it will be the parents paying the fee the Library charges and that isn't the image that the Library wants to put out there. Nor is it a battle that the Library wants to fight - even if it "wins." There has already been considerable disruption to the community because of the change in the school system. This is an opportunity for the Library to be a community restoring force. Hopefully, looking at the bigger picture will provide a different perspective. Michael D. Outreach and Programming for Dementia Sufferers
by Stanczak, Cindy 10 Sep '13

10 Sep '13

We've been asked by a local adult care facility if we could come once each month to lead a craft or other program. About 80% of their residents have Dementia. There would be some supervision by staff, but I need program ideas that are appropriate. Do any of you lead programs in adult care facilities and/or for dementia sufferers?
