program recommendation
by Saffert, Carli 11 Sep '13

11 Sep '13

Hi, folks, We held a program last night with author Donna Searight Simons. She gave a lecture on the history of the 1913 copper strike in the Upper Peninsula, and she also recently self-published a novel based on those events. In her presentation , she speaks about the area where the strike took place, the history of copper mining in the region, and the events that led up to the strike in 1913 and the tragedy at Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan. She mentions her novel briefly, but she focuses primarily on the copper strike itself. In the past, we have had some difficulty in getting an attendance for a local author, but we had a solid turnout for this program because of the Michigan history connection. Several of the audience members had a personal connection either to the strike, the copper mining industry, or to the location. The audience was really engaged, and Donna did a great job with the presentation and with fielding questions from the audience. If your patrons are Michigan history buffs, I definitely recommend this program. You can learn more about Donna's work at copperempire.blogspot.com or you can contact her at dksyooper(a)yahoo.com<mailto:dksyooper@yahoo.com>. Thanks!! Carli Carli Saffert Asst. The Digital Inclusion Survey funded by IMLS
by Hamlin, Joseph (MDE) 11 Sep '13

11 Sep '13

Dear Public Library Directors, Please participate in the Digital Inclusion Survey funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services by November 15th 2013. The survey will generate unique and valuable data in the areas of digital literacy, economic and workforce development, civic engagement, and public access to the internet. You can access the survey by going to http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu. The Digital Inclusion Survey is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and conducted by the American Library Association and the Information Policy & Access Center at the University of Maryland College Park, in partnership with the International City/County Management Association. Why is your participation important? Participation in the survey will allow your library to: * Get a better sense of your community's needs, challenges, and opportunities through interactive tools<http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/content/interactive-map> and how your library's services add value to your community. * Communicate with decision makers about the value of your library's technology-enabled services and public access technologies. * Articulate how your library helps build a digitally inclusive community<http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/content/di-initiatives>, supporting 21st century workforce development, digital literacy, education, and a healthy community. * Identify where your library's services and resources are meeting community needs and where there might be room for improvement or a need for new partners to extend the library's reach. Results from the survey and speed test will provide valuable new data for advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. Please complete the survey by November 15, 2013. How do you participate? Go to http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/ and follow the Complete the Survey button. In addition to the survey questions, libraries are requested to complete a speed test. Instructions are on the first page when you log in to the survey. Speed capture is automatic. Can you see the survey questions before answering them? Yes, you can access a PDF version of the survey sections on the survey project website<http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu/content/digital-inclusion-survey>. Please note that the print and Web surveys are slightly different (not in terms of the questions, but in terms of layout and presentation). Can you save your answers and finish the survey later? Yes, you can save your answers at any time by clicking the 'stop and resume later' button at the bottom of each survey question page. To get back into the survey later, use your ID to login, find your library and click the button that says 'resume' or 'completed.' You can also print a copy of the completed survey for your records. How long will it take to complete the survey? Test estimates ranged from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. Thank you, Joseph Hamlin Library Data Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 West Kalamazoo St. P.O. Children's Cards - Who and How Old?
by Stanczak, Cindy 11 Sep '13

11 Sep '13

Hello all! You've been an *amazing* help on my most recent questions and we've had another one come up that'd like to some feedback on. We currently allow parent or guardian to sign up a child (under age 18) for a library card, and, in doing so, accepting legal responsibility for any fines, fees, and damages accrued on the child's card. But we've had issues with grandmothers signing up children and parents objecting. What about grown siblings? We've also had incidents of non-custodial or just not parent saying that they're parent and signing the child up. In essence, my question is: Who do you allow to sign up a child (under 18) for a Library card (parent, legal guardian, grandparent, auntie/uncle, custodial step-parent, foster parent, non-custodial parent, grown siblings) and what do you ask for in terms of proof? Thank you!!! Cynthia Stanczak Adult & Teen Services Librarian Albion District Library 501 S. Superior St. Albion, MI 49224 (517) 629-3993

Early Literacy demonstration videos - Storyblocks
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 11 Sep '13

11 Sep '13

The Colorado State Library has the following videos as part of their Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy Initiative. These are good for parents, teachers and librarians. "check out our new Storyblocks videos at http://www.storyblocks.org/! We just added 10 new videos, including 4 in Spanish. Storyblocks is a project of CLEL-Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy-that produces short videos featuring librarians demonstrating a rhyme or song and delivering an early literacy tip. The videos are great for parents, library staff, and ECE educators alike. Produced by our statewide PBS station, they're great quality. They can be sorted into English or Spanish, as well as age group (babies, toddlers, and preschoolers). About a third are in Spanish." - from Beth Crist at the Colorado State Library.
