Cricut Machine
by Stacey Comfort 12 Sep '14

12 Sep '14

Hi, all - I'm hoping to get a Cricut machine for use in our Youth section, mostly for display features and bulletin boards. Do any libraries out there have one that they use? If so, what model, and what can you tell me about it? Is it easy to use, do you like it, does it require training or a lot of figuring out? Thanks in advance - you can reply directly to me. Offering insurance
by natalie bazan 11 Sep '14

11 Sep '14

The Dorr Township Library is looking into providing insurance to our staff here and wondered how do other libraries decide on the percentage of insurance to pay for staff? Do you base this on the number of hours worked? The number of years that staff member has worked for the library? Or just a flat percentage for all employees? Also do you offer some type of bonus for those opting out of insurance? Thank you and sorry for all the questions at once! wifi summary
by Jennifer Walters 11 Sep '14

11 Sep '14

Thank you to the tons of responses to my question about 24 hour access to wifi. The majority offer 24 hour access, pointing out how much their patrons love this service and how much it is needed. Some offer it only an hour or two after closing. And about a quarter of the responses offer it only during library hours. Some stated they had had problems and that is why they limit it. Many stated it is a police problem and not a library problem. One stated that as we would not allow this type of behavior inside the library, we shouldn't allow it outside, and blame it on the teens when we turn off the wifi. A suggestion was to turn it off for a month to stop the loitering, and then turn it back on, but I don't think it would take long for them to hear it was back on again. Another suggestion was to cut back on the strength of the signal. Thanks again for all the responses. It will give my board a lot to think about. Do you offer wifi outside library after hours?
by Jennifer Walters 11 Sep '14

11 Sep '14

We need some quick arguments for why to or not to offer wifi 24 hours. Unfortunately, the city has had problems with teens congregating outside at night, using our wifi, and causing other mayhem, including vandalism. I hate to blame the teens, but unfortunately, in this case, that is who it is. The city and library board has asked me to investigate what other libraries, especially small libraries, do. Thank you.
