IRS tax exempt database
by John Sheridan 06 Nov '14

06 Nov '14

Hello all, Recently I went to apply for a grant from PNC Bank online. I was stopped when I got to the part where their system checks the tax exempt status from the IRS exempt organization database. It seems that public libraries are not listed unless they have a 501 (c) 3 status. I phoned the IRS and was instructed to file form 1023 a few days later when I phoned the IRS to get a clarification on a question I was told that we would need to file for 501 (c ) 3 status first. So my question to the collective wisdom and experience librarians, is there a way to get onto the IRS tax exempt database without filing 501 (c) 3? By the way, according to the IRS libraries are government entities under 509 (A) 170 (B) ( 1) ( a ) ( V) and thus tax exempt but not on the tax exempt database. Curiously, form 1023 does not list the above 509 status but does have the (1) ( a) ( IV) and (VI). More and more foundations are looking at on-line applications and have the same verification step which stops the process. John Sheridan Vicksburg District Library jsheridan(a)vicksburglibrary.org

Under the Radar at Cromaine! Absolutely fabulous!
by Ceci Marlow 06 Nov '14

06 Nov '14

Cromaine hosted the Under the Radar guys and it was fabulous. Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman from UTR accomplished something that doesn't happen often: they made us laugh over and over *and* reminded us how great Michiganders are. UTR isn't about "the best of the best" it's about the unique towns, festivals and travel opportunities there are in our state. It really boils down to the people behind these destinations. The coolest thing is that Tom and Jim are a Michigan success story themselves. They both found themselves out of work during the recession. They knew each other as fellow media professionals, so they put their heads together and started pitching ideas to PBS. Their book sales were brisk (we're hoping there can be a group discounted buy, maybe, for public libraries in Michigan?). At least four of our guests (full-house) said it was the best program they'd ever attended! Don't you want to have them, too? Especially wonderful on the heels of our ballot proposal loss (so many heard the news for the first time at the program!), we highly recommend having them educate, enrich, and entertain your community, too! ceci marlow

Photo Contest Software
by Sheri Glon 06 Nov '14

06 Nov '14

Please forgive cross-posting We are planning on running a photo contest next spring to gather photos for a fundraising calendar. Entries will be accepted for several weeks, then the public will vote to select the winners. Does anyone have recommendations for a software product or subscription to manage such a contest? We would prefer to not run the contest exclusively through a Facebook app if possible (i.e. people should not have to login with their Facebook account to enter or vote).
