Most people would say “Yes!” without hesitation. One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue and eye donation. For the past four years, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplant, and to give them an opportunity to join the MichiganOrgan Donor Registry. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life<https://sites.google.com/site/michiganlibraries4life/>. This effort, which began with the University of Michigan’s Taubman Health Sciences Library<http://www.lib.umich.edu/thl>, and has expanded to include public, academic, special, and hospital libraries across the state. This collaborative effort has inspired more than 1,900<https://sites.google.com/site/michiganlibraries4life/statistics> people to sign up as donors! “We’ve received great feedback from library staff,” said Richard Pietroski, Gift of Life Michigan’s CEO. “They appreciate having an easy yet meaningful way to engage their patrons in saving and improving lives. Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,200 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.” More than 95% of Americans<http://organdonor.gov/dtcp/nationalsurveyorgandonation.pdf> support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan only 44% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry, slightly less than the 47% national average. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to properly join the Registry. Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that informational need in our state. “Someone you know probably needs – or will someday need – a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. People die waiting because not enough organs are available. Your library can be a great help by registering donors and/or providing awareness about organ donation,” said Anne Rau, librarian and living kidney donor. “By participating in Michigan Libraries for Lifeyour library is helping to save lives.” We are excited to bring this life-saving event back in 2014! Libraries are welcome to participate for as many hours as they are able to staff a registration table in their libraries, from 2 hours to 7 days. This year’s drive will start on Monday, October 6th and run through Sunday, October 12th. Hi, everyone. I don't recall the subject of magazine subscription services being discussed lately. Would you be willing to share your experiences with companies you may have used? We have used EBSCO for years, but Popular Subscription Service promises to save us money, and Wolper promises outstanding customer service. In September 2012, the Michigan State Parks and Outdoor Recreation Blue Ribbon Panel submitted a report to Governor Rick Snyder that included heritage resources in its vision for a vibrant system of parks, trails and recreation throughout our state. The first paragraph reads: "Michigan's natural resources are the foundation of a world-class parks and outdoor recreation system. The state's abundant, high-quality, and-in many instances-globally unique natural, cultural, historic and prehistoric resources include the Great Lakes and beaches, inland lakes and streams, grass lands, forests, and historic and cultural sites (such as battlefields, lighthouses, ancient burial grounds and birthplaces of notable Michigan residents). These must be protected and enhanced to grow Michigan's economy and improve the well-being of our residents and visitors." Last year, an ad hoc group of regional and statewide heritage organization leaders was convened by the Michigan Historical Commission, the Historical Society of Michigan and the Michigan Historical Center, calling itself the Michigan Heritage Leadership Council. It began meeting to discuss ways our sector can contribute to the vision set out by this report. One avenue is to increase the incorporation of cultural heritage resources into trails and parks. A first step toward achieving this goal is to get a better handle on what is already going on across the state. This is where you come in. privacy and notifications

So....we have our Michigan Library Privacy Act which prevents us from sharing patron record information with those other than the actual patron. Then, we offer notifications via phone, email, or text. What do you do when you know the patron isn't the one with the email address or text number? For example, a child who is two years old cannot read email or a text. (We don't require parental signature with kids cards...just that the parent is with the child when signing them up, so we don't have that element of implied or extended authorization). Michigan Activity Pass: You Can Help Recruit!

All, The second year of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program begins this Saturday, May 24, 2014 at http://michiganactivitypass.info As of today we have 106 participating venues. 53 of these are renewals from this year's 62 participants, while 53 are new partners to MAP. Of the nine current partners that are not (yet) included in MAP Year 2, none of them has contacted me to say they are NOT interested. Rather, they haven't responded to my inquiries. How can you help bring these "lost" partners back to the MAP fold? Well, if your library is located in or near the community of any of these nine venues, and particularly if you have an "in" with any of them, please feel free to reach out to them on behalf of MAP! And the same goes for any other potential partner in or near your community you feel would be a good "fit" for MAP. Yesterday, IMLS released a report showing the number of museums by state http://www.imls.gov/assets/1/AssetManager/MUDF_StateDist_2014q3.pdf Michigan has approximately 1,100 museums. So, we have approximately 10% of these as MAP partners. Pretty good, but that means there are 1,000 others out there! Thanks for your (recruiting) help with the MAP. Does anyone have extra copies of Annie's Ghosts they could give us for our One Book, One County program? I know a few of you have chosen this book for your own community programs, and at least one library had extra copies to give away recently. Library of Michigan MeL.org surveys coming soon!

The Library of Michigan will be conducting surveys about MeL.org in the coming month. As part of managing our Library Services & Technology Act funds as well as maintaining and improving the Michigan eLibrary, we will have three surveys in June. One will be a random phone survey of Michigan residents. The other two will be online surveys - one for library staff at all levels and from all library types and one for library patrons. We will need your help in order to have a good response. When the surveys are available, please consider posting the library patron survey link on your web site or newsletter and also encouraging your staff to complete the library staff survey.
