Annual conference on Underground Railroad coming to Detroit

Good morning, Dr. Roy Finkenbine of the University of Detroit Mercy asked that I share the below with all of you. Dr. Finkenbine has lectured at public libraries in the area on topics related to the Civil War and Solomon Northup (12 Years a Slave). The National Park Service hosts an annual conference on the Underground Railroad each summer. This year it is hosted in Detroit from July 16 to July 20. cid:image004.jpg@01CF5D4D.54021000 For Immediate Release: June 21, 2014 Upper Peninsula History Awards Presented to Marilyn Fischer and Les Cheneaux Historical Association MANISTIQUE, Mich.-Marilyn Fischer and the Les Cheneaux Historical Association won top honors at the Historical Society of Michigan's 65th annual Upper Peninsula History Conference in Manistique, Mich., for their outstanding efforts to preserve and promote the history of the Upper Peninsula. Fischer, who hails from Gulliver, Mich., received the Charles Follo Award, which acknowledges the work of an individual. The Superior Award, which recognizes the achievements of historical societies, museums and other history-related organizations, was awarded to the Les Cheneaux Historical Association, located in Cedarville, Mich. The awards were presented during the Society's Upper Peninsula History Awards Banquet at the Historic Blaney Inn, in Blaney, Mich., on June 21, 2014. THE 2014 CHARLES FOLLO AWARD Marilyn Fischer, this year's Charles Follo Award recipient, is originally from Detroit but has dedicated the last 30 years of her life to the history of the Upper Peninsula. Fischer helped form the Gulliver Historical Society in 1988 and spearheaded the restoration of the Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, which is now listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places and is open to the public as a museum. She has also authored four books about Seul Choix Point and the Gulliver area, including Seul Choix Point Light and Spirits at Seul Choix Point; researched and wrote the scripts for four history video productions; conducted oral history interviews with more than 50 Schoolcraft County families; and written 20 successful grants to fund historic preservation and restoration. The Charles Follo Award was established in 1979 and is named in honor of an Escanaba school teacher who worked to establish historical societies and promote the history of the Upper Peninsula. The Historical Society of Michigan presents this annual award to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the preservation and promotion of Upper Peninsula history. THE 2014 SUPERIOR AWARD This year's Superior Award recipient, the Les Cheneaux Historical Association, originated in 1967 as a display of photographs and artifacts in a dock-based storage shed. As it nears its golden anniversary, that association's volunteers and nine-person staff oversee a historical museum, maritime museum, a nationally known antique wooden boat show and festival of arts, and many other programs that preserve and interpret the Les Cheneaux area's history. The Historical Association's exhibits and programs focus on the area's unique past, especially logging and lumber camps, summer resort hotels, and boating. It offers a wide variety of events, including an annual Antique Wooden Boat Show, a juried art fair, "Artist of the Week" programs, "Music at the Maritime Museum" evenings with local musicians, a Christmas tree auction, and a boat-building workshop. Michigan Activity Pass: Eight Percent Increase in Usage For Year 2/Month 1 Vs. Year 1/Month 1

All, The MAP numbers are in for Year 2/Month 1, and I am pleased to share the with you the following: Usage of MAP for the first complete month of Year 2 is UP eight percent vs the first complete month of MAP for Year 1. This is significant for a number of reasons: 1. The debut of any program receives considerable press coverage and hype, which certainly was the case with statewide MAP last year. This results in increased awareness and thus, usage of said program. Going forward, press coverage can be tougher to get. "Been there, done that." Thus, the eight percent increase in usage vs. last year is significant. 2. We have seen checkouts at libraries in this first month of MAP Year 2, that had no checkouts at all in twelve months of MAP Year 1. As press coverage has leveled off, this tells us that library promotion is making the difference. Keep it up! 3. Our new MAP partner venues are seeing good traffic. Michigan Science Center and Gilmore Car Museum are particularly popular. And the majority of our 50 brand new destinations for MAP Year 2 have already had visitors, destinations such as Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan, Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum, USS Silversides Submarine Museum, Mid-Michigan Children's Museum, and Dennos Museum Center. One brand new partner, Lowell Area Historical Museum, had a checkout on the first day they joined MAP! And of course long time MAP partners Detroit Institute of Arts, Cranbrook Art Museum and Holocaust Memorial Center are continuing to educate and enlighten the public library patrons of Michigan. The bottom line is, if you promote it, he/she/they will come, and check out a MAP pass, too. Look for another edition of Brigette's "MAP Top Ten List" this Friday. Grand Valley State University Libraries seeks energetic and innovative applicants for a Scholarly Communications Outreach Coordinator position, responsible for the overall management and direction of the Libraries’ scholarly communication program and repository services. The person in this position reports to the Head of Collections and Scholarly Communications and provides outreach to GVSU community on scholarly communications issues and services and leads the Libraries’ efforts to support new models of scholarly communication. Responsibilities include advocating for alternatives to traditional publishing models, working with faculty and liaison librarians in identifying and adding materials to the repository, serving as a primary point of contact on copyright issues, and developing and providing University-wide educational opportunities for sharing information about scholarly communications, open access, copyright and institutional repositories. Promotes and administers the Libraries’ Open Access Publishing Support Fund. The successful candidate will contribute to the libraries’ overall leadership team. Required qualifications include a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent; experience working in higher education or an academic library setting; knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communications, open access publishing, and data management and sharing; knowledge of current issues regarding intellectual property, copyright, and fair use; ability to plan and manage projects and project teams; ability to understand and manage the needs of various constituencies, including faculty, students and other administrative offices; excellent written and verbal communications skills; ability to be flexible and manage change; ability to adapt to emerging practices in higher education and scholarly publishing. Experience working with the Digital Commons institutional repository platform or other digital publishing tools and knowledge of current metadata schemas and standards preferred. GVSU librarians are full members of the university faculty and must possess the potential to fulfill the requirements for promotion and tenure, and are expected to engage in scholarship and professional development, service to the institution, and institutional governance. Blissfield book

The book is an Arcadia Publishing Images of America book entitled _Blissfield_. Arcadia publishes local histories. There are many on Michigan towns and cities. Large cities have several on different topics. In it, I try to tell some of the history of Blissfield, Michigan in photographs.
